    Choose my Uni course!
So I'm a bit confused as to what University course I want to do. I've decided to let TSR make suggestions based on my likes and dislikes.

    • I love A-Level ICT
    • Especially the report writing
    • But I can't imagine myself doing Computer Science
    • Programming and computer architecture/infastructure doesn't really interest me
    • I love art
    • But I'm definitely not talented enough to do a fine art degree
    • I just like being creative and have lots of ideas
    • I love being set a project, especially if it means I get to work on my own/independently.
    • My biggest talents would probably be acting and public-speaking
    • I love organising, making everything look nice and stationery (haha, weird I know)
    • I like reading books (fiction mainly) but not in to huge amounts of theory or having to retain lots of information
    • I love having to use the internet or computers to complete projects, making them look nice and seeing the result when you print it or something similar.
    • I love debating and forming speeches on a given topic
    • I love the idea of film-making, but I feel that it's considered a mickey mouse degree sadly
    • I love media, technology, editing etc.
    • I've always had a soft spot for creative writing and would love to be an author only that it's very difficult to be recognised and requires a great deal of time.
    • Somebody suggested one time that I would be a good news presenter. I love the idea of that job!

If I think of any more, I will add them.

I believe that you should do something that you're passionate about, rather than doing something which will result in jobs/a high salary when you're not truly happy.

Obviously I know it's difficult for somebody to make a decision based on a few pieces of information on a computer screen, but this is only for fun really. It's just to offer some advice. :P

It's not about a "random group of strangers", it's about having a group of people available who can offer some advice when I'm unsure what to do.

Well, I do. My teachers are helpful, but it's summer time now and I change my mind so often haha. As for friends/family, they all encourage me to do law or something with a high salary when I know I wouldn't be happy doing this.

Potential barrister? Working on your own, preparing speeches/public speaking, staying organised, creative arguments, and you get to use a computer as part of your work and even in court.

What sort of student are you? High aims Oxbridge kinda person, midrange Russell Group/20-30th unis etc.?

I would look into particular courses by searching for them on UCAS - this also helps with the kind of grades and subjects different unis prefer.

Try searching for journalism, graphic design, animation, or even architecture?

Ooh sorry, skipped the fact you aren't interested in computer architecture. How about degrees related to marketing and advertising?

Mind me asking why if you have no specific field you want to further yourself in and no particular career you want to pursue, why you're looking at university programmes?

    Yeah I thought so too.
It could be a possibility - I'll be attending the open day for the Uni I'm hoping to attend in September and I'll visit the Law talks. The only thing that puts me off is it seems quite theoretical and a lot of reading etc. but hey - I might be surprised.

I'm probably a mid-Russel group student. I live in Northern Ireland so I'll probably go to Queens or University of Ulster.

I think Marketing and advertising is definitely a possibility. I just have some hesitations about the university that offers this with regards to accommodation and location etc. But if I can't find a better course, I'll just have to put up with that! :P

I know for definite that I want to go to University, I'm just having trouble making up my mind about what I want to do. It seems that most courses I am truly interested in are worthless or a Mickey-mouse subject.

DO NOT do marketing/advertising as a degree! Sure, you seem suited to it, but don't waste a degree on it. Do a real subject.

Just come to England/Scotland! Or make the trip down south and go to Dublin

Someone suggested barrister - however a law degree requires one to retain lots of information which you may not be suited to. You should also take into consideration training to become a barrister is very expensive and getting into The Bar is very difficult. I think a degree in marketing would be an excellent choice for you. It's a good degree with skills many employers look for. Another consideration is economics - but that is quite theoretical too and depending on where you go, involves a fair amount of maths.

I do not believe a marketing degree is a bad degree to have. You are taught skills employers really value that many degrees lack. It may not be the 'hardest' degree but it is definitely one employers look for. Perhaps the OP should consider a combination like economics and business/marketing?

Economics would be just fine, and then you can choose to convert to management or something. The moment you throw in 'business' or 'marketing' you taint your degree. An Economics degree is very highly respected by the world's top employers. A marketing degree, not so much. Note that Oxbridge don't do business/marketing - only management as final year options.

I agree with this - if you are going to enjoy advertising or something design-based much more and have a chance of getting a first, it will be more worth your time than a life-draining course in law or economics. But a joint honours is also a possibility.

Why do you feel you should restrict yourself to universities in Northern Ireland? Just as an example, Birmingham is a really nice place to stay, the campus is gorgeous and I think they do lots of degrees which are mixtures and you can mix and match with the modules as well.

If you just type in a key word into here you can see all the options:

    http://search.ucas.com/cgi-bin/hsrun...run?y=2013&w=H

e.g. search 'advertising' then click 'all advertising courses' rather than 'advertising on its own as a single subject'.

    Graphic Design, Film/Media, Advertising
I know you want to stay in Northern Ireland, but have a look at Ravensbourne in London (http://www.rave.ac.uk/) - they may do courses you'd be interested in. If you're interested then you shouldn't be bothered if it's considered 'mickey mouse' and no degree is worthless. People will criticise my degree choice, but it's what I want to study for 3 years.

    That's stupid.
Uni is a really social experience, but the reason people go is to study. You should not aspire to go to uni, you should go to uni because you aspire to be something or learn something.

Forgive me if it seems harsh, but you're basically a representation of this "I must go to uni, otherwise I'm a failure" kinda mentality that has been drummed into our generation - and it's absolutely moronic and counterproductive.
