Because they only care about real sports.

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of football. Too religious for my liking.

Because the Chinese don't put that much effort into building good sporting teams, I mean if China has almost twice the number of people than there are in Europe, then the Chinese should be able to put a decent team together.
How come India who have a larger population are much much much worse then China in the olympics. Having a large population doesnt guarantee success idiot.

Totally agree with that, I say give it 10 years and China will be very competitive at a international level. I'll stick my neck out and say that within 20 years they'll win the World Cup.

No chance. They'll get better but not by much. People have been saying this about Mexico for years, that they should be a powerhouse with their population and the fact it's a football mad country.

Belgium are more likely to win the WC in the next 20 years than China.

It might be because it is a team sport. The majority of sports they are fantastic at are individual based sports. In a team game, be it football, rugby or cricket, it takes more than just technical ability. Team work and general being in a team is something China lacks as the country is very much each to their own to become the best.

I may be incorrect but that's my opinion anyway...
This is sort of it. Apparently the Chinese sporting authorities have decided to focus their energies on sports where a lot of recognition can be gained with minimal effort. In team sports, such as football, you need 11 top class footballers plus reserves and backups. Even with this, it would still be hard to win anything significant.

Instead the pour money into individual sports - gymnastics (14 gold medals requiring only 10 athletes), swimming (athletes able to win multiple golds), badminton, diving etc.

If you were smart you would know that China has about 100 million people than India.

A large population does not guarantee success but it gives you a large pool of people to choose from. That is why it's rare to see countries with small populations (< 50000 people ) get tens of medals at the olympics. If you have a large population and you invest a lot of time and money into developing it, you will eventually get something out of it.

I'm not basing it on population or anything like that. Just look at the investment recently in Chinese football. They are buying top class players, yes it is seen so far as a retirement plan for the oldies like Drogba and Anelka but they are also investing in top players direct from Brazil and Argentina. Like the London 2012 slogan, China are trying to inspire a generation. By having these top class players playing football in China, the game will become more popular and will over time get youngsters into the game. China is amazing at fast tracking their quality in sports. In other sports they have gone from darn right awful to world champions in matter of years.

Watch this space is what I say... (but not literally this space right here on TSR!)

because most live in abject poverty... idiot...

Maybe just having a massive population doesn't secure success, but alongside huge sport investment, it certainly helps

Well the investment in sports argument is only true to an extent as well. We have the Japanese who are also very much interested in sports and invested quite alot in their J-league with only limited success. So with their investment and population you would have expected to rival some of european powerhouses which they obviously aren't.
