Now, it says here that Lord Coe is apparently meant to be naming and shaming the sponsors. Isn't that a bad idea? I thought the sponsors were the ones who held you by the balls, as in you badmouth them you don't get money from them.

I agree that people with ****tier seats should've been moved down though.

Its a ****ing disgrace. I would have loved to see a few events, but tickets were 'sold out'...

Of course, LOCOG wouldn't have known this was going to happen, but I'm severely disappointed in them for giving so many seats to sponsors. This is meant to be a peoples event, the companies are just leeches.

Won't the sponsorship money already have been paid? At any rate, Coe's in a stronger position than they are atm so naming and shaming them shouldn't have massive repercussions for him.

Bloody annoying that they didn't even bother to turn up, I agree. There are so many people who would LOVE tickets to be there

They probably could have worked some of it out. Assuming the tickets have to be given to a named person, if any events coincided then you could tell if someone was scheduled to go to two at once. Now though, if anybody had tickets and didn't have a good reason to not turn up then their remaining tickets can be invalidated and resold.

It's a bit unfair to blame sponsors for not filling out the Millenium stadium though.

The sponsor's reputations are already pretty damaged, tbf Everyone was pissed off that they got so many tickets in the first place, what with this games being marketed as "inclusive" and "something for everyone". But hey ho, that's capitalism for you!!

At the most popular events you can see how the front few rows are empty the ones allocated to the sponsors and Olympic officials. I have noticed that especially at beach volleyball, tennis and swimming which are some of the top events are the ones I have seen with a lot of these empty seats in the front rows.

They should get the sponsors to list if they have empty seats which Locog can give to the troops or resell them on the door (that way the people will all go straight in and fill up the event).

Quite embarrassing for us even if it is the sponsors who aren't taking up the seats. Thousands are trying to buy tickets and then you have hundreds empty. On the door selling should be what they implement.

Not really surprised tbh. I know in the previous games that there were empty seats in the popular sessions, in fact I was wondering why some sessions were sold out already when there're normally a few empty seats in the olympics. Now I know why.


Plus the seats that had the fewest people in the article (women's football and artistic gymnastics) still had tickets available online in the last days before the games, heck there might even be some now.

The sad thing is the UK has been here before with Euro 96 - with similar sponsors. Also, look at the new Wembley and all the seats around the tunnel and the royal box. (See here for more on the background) They are always the last to fill (if they are filled at all) and the first to empty. In their greed to get the best seats, the corporates have ended up with the seats that get the most picture coverage - the ones closest to the action. At a time when there is huge demand for seats and at a time when the spotlight is on economic inequalities following the banking crash, it's not surprising that there has been uproar over this.

I'd like to think they'll turn it around properly but I have huge doubts with LOCOG - they'll probably be bound by existing IOC rules - and they are unlikely to budge an inch.

They should just withdraw a number of seats equal to the unused ones from the organisations' later quotas. i.e. if you have 20 seats allocated in sport x and don't use 19 during the quarters then you only get 1 seat allocation for the finals.

I suspect most of the offenders are media organisations and sponsoring companies who've just put in ridiculous requests for how many seats they need - but if there's any locog people who've not turned up then that is simply poor internal planning.

They could also get people to confirm how many seats they'll take on the day and then re-issue unused ones on the door (I'm sure there'll be plenty of people who wouldn't mind knocking about near a venue for 20 minutes on the offchance of some tickets). But that's probably more complicated for a variety of reasons.

I actually read that the majority of the vacated seats are those reserved for athletes, coaches etc. The sponsor tickets that aren't used are apparently sold in the olympic village on the day.

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the empty seats were reserved for corporates, but I would guess that it isn't as bad as people think it is.

How are tickets being sold now? I heard on the commentary for Team GB women's game last night that it will be pay on the day for GB women vs Brazil. Also, the whole organization of these tickets have been a disgrace. Seeing empty seats at a session that I wanted to go to, and especially in the price category I wanted, is really a joke. By the way, I'm talking about Mexico vs Gabon taking place now at the football in the City of Coventry Stadium.
