Re: Why are SOME physics students so arrogant? No not always, Newton was extremely arrogant.(Original post by EnigmaticSpirit)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but true geniuses tend to be more humble than arrogant i.e. Albert Einstein. -
Re: Why are SOME physics students so arrogant?
They believe it to be the aristocracy of science, and hence believe themselves to be superior to any other non-physicist. I am personally a physicist and I adore it, did I choose it for its reputation? Its good name for being academically challenging? Hell no, I chose it for the same reason an English major chose to study literature - because it's my passion. Not because it would make me look clever or talented, or even for bragging rights. It's not about which degree is the most difficult, or has the best name, it's about which one is your calling. Or failing that the one you think is pretty cool and you'd enjoy taking it a little (lol) further

Re: Why are SOME physics students so arrogant? You are doing what I said not to do in my first post. I said 'tend to', I didn't say 'all geniuses are humble, none are arrogant'.(Original post by TheJ0ker)
No not always, Newton was extremely arrogant. -
Re: Why are SOME physics students so arrogant?
Well Ill tell you my story in regards to my physics teacher , he advised my whole class to not go to university at the beginning of the year and said there's no point any of you go cause their are no jobs out there, he then went around the class to ask everyone what they applied to do at uni , whenever someone said biology he snickered and when someone said chemistry or physics he was like well done and congratulated them. The fields of purity are just a joke you shouldn't let something irrelevant like that have an effect on what you would like to pursue in the future, you should just follow your passion whatever that may be. Me myself I am an hopefully going to become a biologist , pretty much decided this since I was a kid.

Re: Why are SOME physics students so arrogant?Thank you. Yours is probably the best explanation on this thread so far. Maybe I just overlooked the simple explanation that Physics is seen as the pinnacle of science. I don't see why though. Mathematics is the most fundamental science subject.(Original post by I am Ace)

You are doing what I said not to do in my first post
I'm terribly sorry

Re: Why are SOME physics students so arrogant? Those religious folk don't give up though and never will(Original post by EnigmaticSpirit)
I wish they realised that not everyone rejects theories that have a 'tonne of evidence', except for some religious folk (creationists). Maybe the physicists are more vocal? On here, I haven't come across any arrogant; Biologists, Chemists, Artists, Psychologists, Philosophers, etc. Admittedly, I have only come across 3 arrogant Physicists.

I have to be careful with this, but I think it's Asperges Syndrome that can make some people visual thinkers or give them a natural aptitude for maths (which is a big part of what you need to be good at Physics) and people with Asperges can come across arrogant when they don't mean to be. Just a thought. -

Re: Why are SOME physics students so arrogant?
All shall bow down to the Engineers.
Edit: oh wait you are referring to 6th form. Any student that isn't even in uni that thinks highly of themself because they study a science needs a slap and told to sit down.Last edited by Foghorn Leghorn; 29-07-2012 at 14:05. -

I have some interest in Physics but never really pursued it.

Re: Why are SOME physics students so arrogant? All "scientists" are failed mathematicians(Original post by Billton)
When I told my high school maths teacher that I wanted to be a chemistry teacher, his response was:
"Science teachers are just failed maths teachers."
When the OP says that he does not know any arrogant Mathematicians it is because our level of arrogance goes over people's heads

[as does our sense of humour] -
Re: Why are SOME physics students so arrogant?Fine. You're arrogant too. I don't see how scientists are failed mathematicians when mathematicians ARE scientists.(Original post by TenOfThem)

Also, how is a physicist a failed mathematician? That makes no sense whatsoever. Sorry if I am being too pedantic and literal.

Re: Why are SOME physics students so arrogant?
Physicists (and all other scientists/engineers/mathematicians) pretty much have a right to be arrogant, without us you wouldn't be sat at your computer browsing TSR because your computer wouldn't exist and nor would the internet. We put people on the moon, we cure disease's, without us society would still be living in caves.
I'll admit, we're annoying as **** and even i get annoyed at scientists (I studied A level Maths, Chemistry & Physics and I want to do a chemical engineering degree) but hey, we have the evidence to show we're the best of the best.
Awaiting a tonne of negs from jealous non-scientists. -

I love Chemistry, that's all that matters to me! -
Re: Why are SOME physics students so arrogant?
As mentioned previously, all courses have their share of arrogant people. We may find that in our own personal experience, some students are more arrogant than others. For instance, in my college, the maths students thought they were the top dogs, and pretty much acted like it. Many of them refused to talk to people who didn't do Maths or Science. The physics students weren't really that arrogant, surprisingly.
Sometimes, these students are arrogant because it's a common trait they share, or because their tutors have made them feel like they're at the top of the world. Many of the people I know who are like this won't know what's hit them when they leave university.
