Boxing or Muay Thai (Thai boxing)?
I want to pick up one of these sports, but I'm having a hard time picking one. I have found classes close to me in both that are pretty close so that's not really a factor luckily. Is it just personal preference on whether you choose the discipline that only utilises fists or the discipline that utilises several parts of the body?

Anyone had experience in either sport? I guess this is just personal preference but I thought I'd ask anyway. One of the guys who does the Muay Thai has actually been a coach for a winning UFC team, which is pretty impressive. Cheers.

Go with Muay Thai. Boxing is a good sport, but in my humble opinion it's becoming a little bit out dated nowadays. Even from a self defence perspective although you aren't going to be doing head kicks and spinning kicks, learning how to effectively utilise your knees and elbows would be very useful.

Thai Boxing, did a lot of it at Team Kaobon. In the sport you are using defense methods as attack i.e the hardest parts of your body, the elbow and shin. Conditioning these makes for a good kick and stand up. Clinch lets you control the head and throw knees (which ******* hurt).

Cheers lads, I'm thinking about going for Thai boxing. Appreciate the advice.

When you say 'different', do you mean MMA? I would have thought any work you do at the beginning (in any of these sports) will just be pad work. Even if you start sparring it will be fully supervised and protective gear worn I assume.

any other martial arts besides muay thai, jiu jitsu etc. i'm leaning towards muay thai, or maybe both boxing and muaythai

Yep. Definitely Muay Thai. Tried both for a few years and I much preferred it.

edit - to the guy above, there isn't much point in going with boxing & MT together. MT will teach you a lot of what boxing already has. If I were you I'd go for something like Judo. They complement each other well.

Thanks mate, looks like Muay Thai might have it. I don't have the money for private but it says small groups which is good enough for me.

Heard Muay Thai leads well into MMA if you fancy it as well, but I'm only interested in that since I watched 'Warrior' last night

Boxing, because I find it more interesting, and kicking sux. ****ing arthritis and ****.

Making your decision based upon which is 'better for self defence' is ****ing stupid. People talking like that have obviously never been in a real fight.

And regarding Judo, I did it for years, if you wanna go into something like MMA I can see the use, but in the real world? No. Real fighting comes down to the messy basics of power, aggression and willingness to fight.

And who gives a **** if something is 'outdated' (which boxing really isn't)? Going with something because it's fun >>>> going with something because it's currently in vogue.

    Ta for the post

I have no experience of either sport (mostly just been reading on the internet) so I can't pass comment on which I find more interesting or fun. Maybe I should just start with one and see how it goes, changing to the other if I don't like it.

I was about to say exactly the same thing. I know loads of guys including myself that thought they were invincible because they boxed or did a martial art, then had the **** kicked out of them in a street fight. Mainly because a street fight involves multiple opponents and/or weapons. Also unless you're some dick that picks a fight with people smaller than you every friday and saturday night in your local then the likelihood you are going to be involved in a 'fair' street fight is slim. Therefore don't base your descision on self defence.

Well, yeah, that'd be the logical solution. A lot of it, for me anyway, comes down to the place and the people. I had more fun doing judo than anything else primarily because the people ruled.

I wasn't don't worry, just wanted opinions of the sports from people who have first hand experience. Did you box?

I sparred for about 5/6 years, i never competitively fought. Hoping to get back into it though in the next few months. I mainly did it for the exercise and circuits, but i thoroughly enjoyed the sparring and training with the other guys there.

lol I know that's an exaggeration, but did you SERIOUSLY think you'd be invincible (or rather, thinking no one could ever beat you), if you took a martial art? >__>

Basically I was out with some mates and some dick that was holding a large peice of wood decided to start on us. My mates **** themselves but I thought I could take him. What I didn't realise that he had two mates round the corner to back him up. Thus instead of it being me against him with a bat, it was me against him, his bat and his two mate, and hence I suffered a beating.

I have friends that have been in similar situations. One almost had his nose bit off.

id go muaythai but i love muaythai, BJJ and MMA. id say in terms of fitness cadio is about the same but but with thai u will work all of your body evenly..

from a self defense point your fists are primary so boxing is good for that as it will give u solid handwork. however when u learn to use elbows n knees n feet they do some real damage. and a big this is sparta style push kick sending someone flying is always funny. plus i think thai is better for self defense if your of a smaller build. i know theres a few little thai bloke i wouldnt wanna fight. also if its for self defence throw some bjj in there cos ive found if it not over in 5 seconds it usely ends up on the floor

im bais cos i love thai but realy i think it comes down to coach. if u have a good coach u cant go far wrong. if your near york check out rich cadden one of the best coaches in the country and defo the best thai fighter. he does quite a bit with guys from york uni.
