lol I know that's an exaggeration, but did you SERIOUSLY think you'd be invincible (or rather, thinking no one could ever beat you), if you took a martial art? >__>
Not no one could beat me, but I thought because most people weren't sparring or training in martial arts I was a better fighter. I was a naive teen, I learned my lesson.

I want to pick up one of these sports, but I'm having a hard time picking one. I have found classes close to me in both that are pretty close so that's not really a factor luckily. Is it just personal preference on whether you choose the discipline that only utilises fists or the discipline that utilises several parts of the body?

Anyone had experience in either sport? I guess this is just personal preference but I thought I'd ask anyway. One of the guys who does the Muay Thai has actually been a coach for a winning UFC team, which is pretty impressive. Cheers.
Dont take your muay Thai training. From ufc mma dimwits ffs,ask yourself has ufc produced any MT fighters of any recognised standard ? I'd make the assumption you don't have the option of training in phuket or bangkok because you'd then have the option of choosing a style too and much more choice of top schools that comppete at the Bangla, lumpinee etc. But I understand there are now affiliated schools here and in Europe these days, there is one in. Halifax I believe

Haha, yeah. You could be like a 1289731231th dan black belt but that means **** when you're up against 10 or so guys.

Real fighting just comes down to is it worth the risk or not / if it is, am I prepared to go all for it. I'm kinda poor at making these judgements apparently, but ambulances are fun. ;p

Basically I was out with some mates and some dick that was holding a large peice of wood decided to start on us. My mates **** themselves but I thought I could take him. What I didn't realise that he had two mates round the corner to back him up. Thus instead of it being me against him with a bat, it was me against him, his bat and his two mate, and hence I suffered a beating.

I have friends that have been in similar situations. One almost had his nose bit off.
with enough training leg beats bat lol

The level of training isn't actually that great in Thailand, they just have a crazy amount of gyms and fighters. It's easy to find training that's as good, if not better than the standard in Thailand.

If only the bloke holding it was so kind as to hold it stable and with the handle up, rather than smacking you round the head with the heavy bit!

Ah-ha! I was expecting you here!

Sorry what? I'm not entirely sure if the OP is wanting to train in the UFC, lol. I'm sure there are plenty of schools around that are credible - one just has to search. Plus, why shouldn't he take it if he enjoys it/is interested in it? >_>

Sure, WC is good, but I'm not sure how many fighters there are of a recognised standard, in regards to the art, lol.

That's basically a nothing comment given most of muay Thais stars have come from these schools.if schools here are so much better why have they not produced a champion of note? And more schoold equyals more choice and abilty to choose type boran lopburi etc. Some westerners go over and are shocked at the harshness of training buut lots of Australians, Americans go for 6m stints to up their game so to speak. The idea if this thread is to helpp ths guy improve his muay btw

I sparred for about 5/6 years, i never competitively fought. Hoping to get back into it though in the next few months. I mainly did it for the exercise and circuits, but i thoroughly enjoyed the sparring and training with the other guys there.
This is what I want to be doing, just enjoying the sport and improving my fitness, perhaps with some sparring when I improve. I'm watching some of the Mayweather-Hatton 24/7 and it has me swung back to straight boxing, I'm so indecisive.

    Again, appreciate everyone's comments.

Hope fully this will persuade you to try out Muay Thai. Dutch legend Ramon dekkers, I also had a great K1 compilation of Buakaw Por Pramuk but I lost it.

Do both, then pick what you prefer or stick with both, it's up to you. Ignore all the bull**** posts about self defense and stuff like that on here, also ignore people trying to persuade that one is better than the other. Also find a good boxing/muay thai gym, you might not like the first one you try, so try the closest ones to you and go to your favorite.

as for the whole street fight thing i think it comes down to the person. as alot of the time it come down to how nasty are u willing to get. size of the fight in the dog and all that u have to realy want to hurt them.

and when people start pulling knifes out over arguments trust me its not worth it, those are the kinda people that even if beat them there and then they could easy just turn up at your house when your half asleep and stab u in your own door way.

so try not to look at it to much in terms of self defense. fitness, have fun get some discipline and focus should be what your after.

LOL, likewise to your original post. What didn't you understand?

You mentioned that UFC has 'produced' no credible fighters, which is clearly wrong, and I made a comment mentiong that it's unlikely the OP wouldn't want to go into UFC. Then I said there are credible schools to find... so I can't see what you didn't understand there, buddy.

Oh, and I mentioned WC because I always seem to see you bash MMA (and related arts) in the martial arts society thread (like you just did now), and I have seen a few posts of you defending WC a lot.

Here he is fighting under Muay Thai, he was one of the first to go to Thailand and smash Thai's up, that is why I chose this video because his aggression and technique gets the picture across well.

And regarding Judo, I did it for years, if you wanna go into something like MMA I can see the use, but in the real world? No. Real fighting comes down to the messy basics of power, aggression and willingness to fight.
Bull****. I took up Judo after being impressed at seeing my 2nd Kyu friend split a guy's head open and give him a major concussion outside of a pub with an effortless Osoto Gari. And during the only self defense situation I've ever been in since training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (and later Judo too) I brutalized a chav's elbow joint with an armbar from an open guard when I was sat down on the train and he grabbed my laptop. Now, you know what's a bad idea in a fight? Punching someone in the head without wraps or gloves. Even Mike Tyson nearly ended his career prematurely when he broke his wrist in a street fight.

I thiink you've lost the plot kid.I said ufc has produced no MUAY THAI of recognised standard -those are different words with different meanings. I just said if op wants to train MT or boxing, go to arecognised MT or boxing gym, not an mma pile of tosh. If he wanted to waste his time he could do boxcersize at his local fitness first right? If you want to learn to play the drUms you don't go to a chimp with two sticks and a tin pot
