biology, psychology, history... no idea on fourth choice!?
I want to do psychology at uni.. Might apply to Cambridge/Oxford. I've picked Biology, psychology and history for definite. However I'm stuck on what to pick for my fourth AS! I don't want to take maths as I'm not interested in it. What other subject would suffice? I've had thoughts about philosophy, economics, english...
Thanks guys!

What you want to apply for would be more useful than knowing where you want to apply for, but Chemistry would give you a nice trio of Science based A-levels.Thank you!(Original post by scribbledoutname)

If your serious about Psychology at a top uni Maths would definitely be the next Best choice ! However, any other case mix subject should be fine as you have biology and psych as part of your choices
However keep in mind that places like Oxford and Bristol offering experimental Psychology will look favourable towards Maths - although it's not a requirement
That said it would be more important to take a subject that you will get an A/B in than that of Maths/stats/Chen if your not confident with it

Chemistry, biology & psychology were my A2s and they work well together. They compliment each other, chemistry makes biology easier and then biology makes psychology easier :-)
Chemistry IS hard but it is a welcome break from "How Science Works" and vague essay markschemes, in that many of the answers are concrete results of a calculation.

Re: biology, psychology, history... no idea on fourth choice!?Do what you enjoy- not what you think will look impressive. Chances are if you don't have an interest in a subject then you won't do as well, for example which is better: and E in chemistry or an A in philosophy? Remember you're going to be studying it for a year or more so make sure you have an interest in all of your subject choices!(Original post by scribbledoutname)
Is chemistry as difficult as people make out? I don't really like it as much as english or philosophy
I would recommend English if you enjoy it more than chemistry.

Re: biology, psychology, history... no idea on fourth choice!?Is there a lot of maths in it? I'm most probably going to drop it for A2(Original post by ChloeElizabeth)

I was never that great at maths (got an A at GCSE after several Ds and Es in mocks - believe I fluked it) the maths comes in more at A2. But it's not high level mathematical concepts or anything. Nothing new from GCSE there. Just percentages and graphs and ratios as much as I can remember :-)(Original post by scribbledoutname)

Re: biology, psychology, history... no idea on fourth choice!?I would do what you enjoy. Chemistry and maths are the most directly useful, but I got into cambridge psychology without chemistry/biology so you don't NEED them (well, for PPS, which covers the same content as other psych degrees). Getting good UMS marks is more important, so you could do english if you enjoy that more.(Original post by scribbledoutname)

Re: biology, psychology, history... no idea on fourth choice!?Yes apparently Cambridge ask for module marks or something? What other uni/courses did you apply to if you don't mind me asking? Thank you! x(Original post by iammichealjackson)

Re: biology, psychology, history... no idea on fourth choice!?I live in the north east (which shows in my choices) York (insurance), UCL, Sheffield and Birmingham. Yeh cambridge looks at your AS module marks, which should be good (mine weren't great though!). You've already got the biology basics, psychology and a good essay writing subject (History). English has been useful for me since i am not naturally that good at writing essays. I would go for something you can do well in, whether that be maths or english or philosophy.(Original post by scribbledoutname)

Saying that, chemistry is useful for understanding in more depth biology, and maths is good for getting comfy with numbers (although it will more directly benefit you if you do statistics modules!). Although getting good grades is also important (chemistry is a bit of a bitch of an a level apparently)Last edited by iammichealjackson; 31-07-2012 at 14:22.
