Looking for a decent Christian comeback to this Bible verse...
Genesis 6:3
Then the LORD said, "My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal; his days will be a hundred and twenty years."
Many Christians interpret this as God putting a limit on human age up to 120 years old.
However Jeanne Louise Calment lived to 122 years, 164 days from 21 February 1875 – 4 August 1997.

You could always go for the metaphorical approach, but that is clearly overused!
Or you could even point out the "he" part. The person that lived past 120 was a she.
You have a point -
Re: Looking for a decent Christian comeback to this Bible verse...Haha thats desperate, have you been talking to Ray Comfort about this?(Original post by kyleball)

Re: Looking for a decent Christian comeback to this Bible verse...Did he mean 'Man' as short for 'Mankind' meaning human beings collectively?(Original post by KnapAttackUK)

Re: Looking for a decent Christian comeback to this Bible verse...I think any argument against that verse would be desperate! I cannot see a valid argument to be honest.(Original post by Nacho King)

Re: Looking for a decent Christian comeback to this Bible verse...Heh, he obviously did - man is still used sometimes in the third person today (though very rarely tbh, you'll only find it today in films or books set ages ago). Still, it's a funny play on words that could diffuse a tense argument and possibly allow you to dodge the question - this would be a ****ty approach of course, and is bad arguing, but getting out of this one will be tough.(Original post by Nacho King)

I suppose you could say the whole metaphore thing as someone suggested before, but the person you're arguing with probably has many pre-prepared answers for a christian who uses the "it was a metaphore" argument, so be warned! -

Re: Looking for a decent Christian comeback to this Bible verse...Since when did we dismiss things because they were in the Old Testement? You can't just throw away 50% of the Bible.(Original post by dongonaeatu)
it is old testement -
Re: Looking for a decent Christian comeback to this Bible verse...that verse was for the time of the mosaic tribes which would not have lived over 120 years(Original post by Nacho King)

Re: Looking for a decent Christian comeback to this Bible verse...That it will be the eventual average age, like a general rule.(Original post by Nacho King)
If it were a metaphor, what would you say its meaning was as a metaphor?

This website also talked about the 120 years signifying when the floods would come as a different perspective on the verse. -
Re: Looking for a decent Christian comeback to this Bible verse...Well considering when Genesis was first written you could argue that 125 years old would have been a very old age!(Original post by Nacho King)
Genesis 6:3

What they didn't realise was science and medicine would eventually see a day where someone could live well past 125 years.
I don't think there is any comeback for it. It's just an old book and the world has moved on since then
.
If you want scary and shocking you want to read some of the old testament! Now that's a badly out of date (And Touch) book

Re: Looking for a decent Christian comeback to this Bible verse...I've read over some of the OT, it totally destroys the image of an all loving God. No wonder Gideons decide to only give out the NT to schools, its my theory that they know that the OT is not a good recruiting tool to Christianity, so they pretend it doesn't exist.(Original post by DalePie)

Re: Looking for a decent Christian comeback to this Bible verse...What does that matter? If you are saying that the Bible is not relevant to us today, then why is God not releasing Bible version 2?(Original post by dongonaeatu)
that verse was for the time of the mosaic tribes which would not have lived over 120 years
