Re: Is the NHS the envy of the world???I was just about to mention France - but you could easily add Austria, Japan, Norway, Holland and various other countries to the list.(Original post by jumpingjesusholycow)
Er, No.
Whilst I am very fond of the NHS and will sing its praises, there are considerably many nations with more effective healthcare services than ours, including France.
Believe me, as much as it irks me, the French laugh at the state of our healthcare. -

The NHS is arguably the best healthcare system in the world. If not the governments, I am sure that at least the population of other countries are jealous of us.
Except the USA, because they know they have to hate socialism. -
Re: Is the NHS the envy of the world???
As I've noted before, the NHS can best be described as the envy of the third world. It provides reasonably-acceptable health care, free at the point of entry, which is beyond the wildest dreams of someone in the Sudan, but coming from the States it's pretty shocking how medieval a lot of the facilities and procedures are in comparison. I think a lot of British people just don't know that there's anything better, and of course are constantly told how much everyone envies them.

Re: Is the NHS the envy of the world???Of course our NHS is the best in the world because we say so. The other countries you guys are talking about don't exist or it isn't free free. Who cares if you may have to wait for a few weeks/months to see a specialist or you pay a few quid for prescription medicine. We are the envy of the world and others don't know what they are missing. Let's encourage more health tourism!!!(Original post by jumpingjesusholycow)
Agreed.

Re: Is the NHS the envy of the world???
No. The majority of the world aren't even aware of the NHS as a institution. All they know is we have good healthcare. But, they also know that the majority of developed countries also have good healthcare. In terms of developed countries, again generally they have efficient healthcare themselves. We were ranked 18th in a flawed WHO ranking, even though flawed this is like one of the only rankings that's been done and one that people commonly cite. The US was ranked 38th, looks bad, right? But, look at other countries who are in the 30s; Canada at 30th, Finland 31st, Australia 32nd, Denmark 34th and you've got New Zealand at 41st. Surprising, right?
The way the British talk about the NHS is like the way Americans talk about their freedom. You both act like you're the only ones with them and in rankings to do with them, neither of you topped it.Last edited by Annoying-Mouse; 30-07-2012 at 08:32. -
Re: Is the NHS the envy of the world???
It isn't the best system in the world, it is an effective system for a country with varying income levels and a sizeable under-class but as a whole very little of it can be deemed as excellent.
Much rather the system of Hong Kong, Singapore or best of the bunch Switzerland.
Hospitals in Switzerland are 100x cleaner, technologically advanced, significantly more efficient and doesn't require "other people's money" to support it. -
Re: Is the NHS the envy of the world???Yes it does. Switzerland has a similar 'social insurance' scheme to the rest of Europe with regard to healthcare. To give just a couple of examples, everyone must buy insurance, the healthcare companies must offer insurance to anyone who asks for it and can't charge a premium greater than 8% of your income.(Original post by Herr)
