He's never heard of the suffragette movement!Hi guys,
My boyfriend and I were watching the Opening Ceremony last night on iPlayer (as he missed it on Friday) and as I'm sure you're all aware, a large feature of the ceremony was the journey through British history.
When the suffragettes appeared, my boyfriend questioned who they were. I told him "they're the suffragettes" and his response was a thoroughly confused, "who?" I told him he must know who Emmeline Pankhurst was and he replied "nope, never heard of her."
Now I find it quite shocking that at the age of 24, someone can have no idea who Emmeline Pankhurst and the suffragettes were. But is this common? Do people really not know about the suffragettes unless they bother to read up on it?
EDIT: People are mentioning that they haven't heard of the suffragettes because they didn't take history past year 9 - well I didn't, and yet my boyfriend did it at GCSE and doesn't know. So I'm not convinced that's a legitimate reason.Last edited by snowyowl; 30-07-2012 at 18:30. -
Re: He's never heard of the suffragette movement!
We never did anything about the suffragettes in history until GCSE. I had a book about Emily Davidson so I did know a bit about them beforehand, probably the most in my history class. It is overlooked in history lessons before that - I never knew until we studied it in year 11 that there were 2 different votes for women groups, there were also the Suffragists who used peaceful means - and it shouldn't be, it's an important part of history considering we learn about Henry VIII, what a great example that is for women.

Re: He's never heard of the suffragette movement!Meh, it's a shame, but I have to say I wouldn't be suprised if a lot of young people have that response. Brits on the whole have a very poor knowledge of their own history, from my experience anyway(Original post by snowyowl)

I blew my top when my boyfriend didn't know who Jason and the Argonauts were.. he is now an ex-boyfriend
edit: for those thinking that I dumped my boyfriend BECAUSE of this, you are being very silly and this is just a little joke, keep your pants on.Last edited by Frey; 31-07-2012 at 16:37. -
Re: He's never heard of the suffragette movement!
I've heard of them, and know it was a movement to get rights for women, but apart from that, nothing. I never did History past year 9, and even this little knowledge I have was due to some extra reading I did back then, don't think we ever actually covered it in school!

Re: He's never heard of the suffragette movement! How? There are countless films made on the story too.(Original post by Frey)

Anyway, it get's worse. People actually think the Disney "Hercules" was an accurate representation of the God's and think Hercules was called Hercules... It's Heracles. -
Re: He's never heard of the suffragette movement!Exactly.... when I started to go into detail about the story, he started to go, 'oh yeahhh.. I think there's a film on it(Original post by AntisthenesDogger)

Haha, 'Hercules' is awesome, but I don't think they could screw up the plot any more.... same with 'Troy'... and '300'....etc etc :P if we're being super pedantic it should be Ἡρακλῆς.

Re: He's never heard of the suffragette movement!Does it really matter? I myself never did GCSE or AS History and have just heard of the term. I think you should just accept his "ignorance" - surely there's something well known to your boyfriend and the rest of the world that you too may not be aware of?(Original post by snowyowl)

Re: He's never heard of the suffragette movement!
Does it really matter to you unless you are a hardcore feminist?
I only know of them because my passion is history, ask any of my friends and they'd have no idea. In the grand scheme of the syllabus it plays a relatively tiny role and I can only tihnk of it once popping up. So no, I wouldn't be too mad.
I'm sure there's things you haven't heard of that he thought everybody would know too :P -
Re: He's never heard of the suffragette movement!
It was never covered in History and I only did History upto year 9 - lessons focused on more slave history or WW1 and WW2 or something about British monarchs (from what I remember now). I know very little about the suffragette movement but only because my mum recently did a citizenship test to get her British passport so it was in the book and I read it when I was helping her. I think if you didn't do History past a certain point, you wouldn't know much about this topic..in my experience, anyway.

Re: He's never heard of the suffragette movement!
I'm shocked at that, but then there's an awful lot we aren't taught about in schools... if you enjoy learning about stuff and improving your general knowledge, great, but otherwise we only seem to be taught little bits, and that too only stuff which aids us for exams. At school, I didn't learn about the suffragettes until GCSE history either, and even then it was only because we were with a particular exam board.

Are we sure that suffragettes aren't touched upon when doing WW1 history before GCSE?
People that don't take history further than year 9 just aren't likely to remember much more than Henry VIII's 6th wives and how to read roman numerals.
I didn't take history past year 9, whereas he did it for GCSE.(Original post by MarcD)
We didn't cover it until GCSE either, so unless you did GCSE history or had an active interest in British history, chances are you wouldn't know about the suffragette movement.
To be entirely fair, if I hadn't taken A Level English Literature I would have never studied WWI... (I still knew it had happened, just hadn't studied it at all).
Perhaps it isn't as shocking as I thought though.
