Re: International students in GlasgowI will get a pass for Freshers Week, but the orientation events end before I even get to Glasgow,so I'll just use the free bus ride to halls(Original post by iammaxho)
Hello classmate, will you join the orientation programme? -
Re: International students in Glasgow
Basically, I've already firmed my schedule.
27/8 - Arrive Edinburgh, will live in there for a few days before school starts. Meanwhile, I really have to look around Glasgow and Edinburgh to search for flats. I originally applied Queen Margaret residence, unfortunately, I was assigned to Murano hall instead of QM. And I heard that Murano is quite a dangerous place, which near Maryhill. One of my friends' friend was stabbed in face by a junkies(And yes, many students got stabbed and a lot of junkies are there)! This is completely freaked me out. Therefore, I decided not to accept the offer and rent my own flat.
I also registered for the international orientation programme as well.
4/9 - 10.30 Glasgow Walking Tour
5/9 - Stirling Castle & Glengoyne Distillery
6/9 - 10.00 Glasgow Bus Tour
And I am still thinking whether I should register a pass for freshers' week. Since I am not living at hall, I do have no friends in Glasgow. Would it sounds a bit stupid to go to the freshers' week alone?

Re: International students in GlasgowAs a matter of fact, I am not living in Glasgow. I heard all these from friends. My friends' friend got stabbed in face, this is an undoubtedly truth. It would be genuine if you can tell me more about Glasgow rather than just saying "bull ****" .(Original post by Norton1)
Bull.****.
Thanks a lot. -
Re: International students in GlasgowThe plural of anecdote is not data. Students getting stabbed is incredibly rare.(Original post by iammaxho)

You've not asked any questions about Glasgow, so I'm not sure what you would want to know. -
Re: International students in GlasgowWell, then I really want to know which places we should avoid going to?(Original post by Norton1)

BTW, is "bull ****" only referring to "many students got stabbed"? What about junkies? Are there many junkies near murano? And I read some threads saying that Murano hall is famous for partying, is that true? As I am really looking for a quiet place to live so that I can concentrate on my study.Last edited by iammaxho; 03-08-2012 at 21:07. -
Re: International students in GlasgowGlasgow is the 3rd biggest city in the UK, so giving an exhaustive list of places not to go is pretty difficult. Use your common sense, don't go deep into Maryhill and Ruchill if you're living near Murano, and if you're walking somewhere dark and deserted then consider a taxi. Basically, if you live near the uni you would need to go out of your way to find somewhere dangerous. (although Kelvin Way at night is not recommended, and I've never like Argyle Street)(Original post by iammaxho)

Murano is more party halls, yes. If you wanted university accomodation which would be quiet they have postgrad accomodation at Kelvinhaugh Street/Gate. Of course that might be full at this point. -
Thanks for your suggestion!(Original post by Norton1)

I am now considering to rent a flat in hillhead or woodland.

Re: International students in GlasgowI visited Murano and I think that's a cool place with a lots of students. Maryhill is far from both the city centre and the uni, yes, so going out alone might be dangerous at night. BUT there are free buses at every hour and you don't really need to walk alone at night when you have other 1500 students living at your same place.(Original post by iammaxho)

I don't think many of us will have any friend before fresher's week. You basically go there and hope to find somebody as in need of human relationship as you are, I guess...And I am still thinking whether I should register a pass for freshers' week. Re: International students in GlasgowOh my god,I'll be living at Murano and I'm already freaked out by all the nasty comments I read about it :X Now I'm thinking I made a HUGE mistake, but time will tell.(Original post by iammaxho)

As to Freshers Week - GO,GO,GO! This is the only time in uni you'll have the opportunity to meet so many people at the same time,so don't lose this chance, especially if you're not living in halls. -
Re: International students in GlasgowHuh, maybe i am just overreacted coz you will seldom encounter these things in Hong Kong. As Norton1 said, "The plural of anecdote is not data. Students getting stabbed is incredibly rare." So, i guess you will be fine to stay in Murano. However, i declined the Murano offer, I have to looking for flat anyway.(Original post by VanillaOwl)

Re: International students in GlasgowI'm arriving on September 7 but my flight is at like 11 pm so I might as well stay at my friend's place and then move in in the morning(Original post by pietro93)
Guys when are you leaving for Glasgow? I wanted to arrive on Sep 3 but there are no flights on that day so I'll probably have to get there some days before Fresher's Week, or at the middle of it...

Re: International students in GlasgowNo, it's not a bad area. Just Kelvin way is very, very quiet at night and is just beside Kelvingrove park which is a bit of a magnet for illicit activities. Argyle Street just isn't that nice a street. Everywhere round there is fine.(Original post by aledora)
I am from Cyprus and will be studying Modern Languages....Arriving on 9th ,Kelvin Court is my choice which is close to Kelvin Way and Argyle Street .Is it really a bad area? -
