I don't understand people on the tube?
Whenever I use the tube in London, I see the train come in and the first say 3 carriages are packed, then near the end carriages there will be like one person sat in them, why do people choose to stand in the packed carriages when they could sit in the peace and quiet of nearer the end ones? I don't understand? Anyone want to shed some light on this?

Re: I don't understand people on the tube?Hehehhee it's brilliant really. I myself made that socially awkward walk down to the empty area of the train(Original post by _Shmiley)

It might be because standing up makes people feel like important business(wo)men, or just that they want to be right by the stairs when they get off so they can dash to their helicopters at the next station. Tubes are funny
What's worse is when the tube stops completely and you're all stood there in a dark quiet tunnel in complete silence. I was sooo tempted to say "well this is awkward!"

Re: I don't understand people on the tube?Pretty much this OP.(Original post by HalleStar)
The packed carriages are usually the ones nearer to the exit so that's why. I know i always get on the packed carriage when i'm going to college because that where the exit is and i need to get out asap. -
Re: I don't understand people on the tube?
cos people can't be bothered to walk all the way down the platform to the end of the train

last time i was on the tube, i got on the first carriage and it was packed, so with each tube stop, i got off the train, and got back on further down, till eventually i found a peaceful carriage where i could sit
how else can i occupy myself when people pretend you don't even exist??

Re: I don't understand people on the tube?It makes a difference trust me. If i get off at the exit then i can get to the lifts faster and get out of the station faster whereas if i got of farther down i would still have to walk to the exit and be stuck in foot traffic there and then wait for those ahead of me to get on the lifts and i'll probably get on the 3rd lift that comes down. Long and it'll make me late(Original post by _Shmiley)
I don't see why walking for a few seconds will make that much difference to getting to the exit? I would rather like to just sit down, relax for a short time and rest up before walking to the exit. I don't see the advantage??

For example, I get off the northern Line at Bank station and because the station is so crowded if I'm at the opposite end to the exit it can sometimes take 5 minutes or more to get to it. -
Re: I don't understand people on the tube?
f you're in a rush it's easier to stand for 22minutes in a crowded carrige, jump off and already be at the exit
than sit down at the end of the tube train and have to walk up the platform.
Sometimes if you want to get an earlier train you will have to leave up to 40minutes earlier and it makes your journey longer, and you get less sleep haha, Or if you're rushing back from a lunch break
I'd like to know why no one looks at each other or smiles. It's so awkward hahaLast edited by Lovebite; 30-07-2012 at 14:19. -
Re: I don't understand people on the tube?
Being a Londoner I concur it's all about exits. However, I'm non native so I'd rather it take me a bit longer to get out of the station, I always leave enough time so that I'm not in a mad panic to get out.
The other thing that really amuses me are the people that run to catch a train in the station. Why? There's another one in about a minute!
Londoners are curious creatures of habit

Re: I don't understand people on the tube?
I commuted to college for 2 years and always, always sat in the empty carriage at the end. Sure, I had to walk for a couple of minutes, but the journey was SO much more pleasant, I don't understand these people either!
There were about ten people who always sat in the same carriage as me every day, we never spoke but it was bizarrely comforting to see familiar faces

Re: I don't understand people on the tube?
Generally, it's to save time at interchanges/exits so you have minimal distance to walk at the other end. I'm not to bothered by being a bit cramped for ~5 stops if I save time overall.
I do think this sometimes, however if you're running late for something you try to hurry, even on the tube!(Original post by FelineCostumier)

As a Londoner, this is something I don't understand. Particularly in the summer when it's much nicer to walk than get the cramped, smelly tube.(Original post by _Shmiley)
I also don't understand people who on a perfect sunny clear day, will take the tube to like one stop over that would only take 10 minutes to walk to... :P maybe my head is stuck far too into the countryside :P

Re: I don't understand people on the tube?Yeah this and for my family at least the other two reasons are 1) if it's a cross platform interchange like at Finsbury Park, your only hope of catching the train sitting at the other platform is to be closest to the connecting passageway and 2) because some tube platforms (Clapham North) tend to look like this;(Original post by Historophilia)

We don't like the walk to the other end. -
