Oxford or Cambridge: Medicine?
FIRST QUESTION

This questions probably been here a lot, but here me out.
As the title hints, I am hoping to do Medicine in either Oxford or Cambridge however I also want Psychology incorporated into this degree as I don't wish to do a Joint degree.
I would also like to know an honest opinion of what the course will be like in these two universities (pros and cons)?
I was also wondering does the college affect the teaching of medicine and if so which college for each UNI is better?
Last but not least, which university, in your opinion is better for medicine.
-I'm a confused soul as you can tell, I'd be grateful if you would help me!

As for phycology, I didn't know what it was until I googled it. You would have to have a look at what subjects you can do for the 3rd year in both Oxford and Cambridge to see if that would be possible. I think you could probably do Plant Sciences in 3rd year at Cambridge, which would presumably be quite suitable.
EDIT: I clicked on your profile, it says you are doing "phycology" at A Level. Are you just spelling Psychology incorrectly, both in this thread and in your profile? Because I'm pretty sure Phycology (the study of algae) isn't an A Level subject... If you mean Psychology, you can definitely do that in your 3rd year at Cambridge.Last edited by Chief Wiggum; 30-07-2012 at 21:36. -
Re: Oxbridge: Medicine?If you mean Phycology* rather than a mistype of Psychology then the choice is pretty simple - Cambridge - where you have a chance (although it may be inadvisable...) to do other natural science 3rd year papers. At Oxford to do this would be a faff & most likely add a year to make the degree 7 years. Incorporating some psychology on the other hand would be do-able at Oxford - pick a Neuroscience-esque FHS & you used to be able to do a Psychology FHS paper in place of the extended essay.(Original post by coffeeaddict123)

Yes - the other ones have been answered a lot. Start practising your research skills.
Oxford is better though.
* Yes, I googled it too! -

Re: Oxbridge: Medicine?Awwww well x) as long as i get my answers and no one bombs me for my spelling mistakes(Original post by Ronove)
I think you should have done a bit of research before posting this, get ready for some potentially harsh responses.

Re: Oxford or Cambridge: Medicine?I spelt Psychology incorrectly x____x but I'm sure a plant lover would scroll across this page and find your answer very helpful(Original post by Chief Wiggum)
I replied to your other thread as well, but I might as well post my (not very helpful) post here as well:
The college will organise your supervisions, but lectures are attended by students from all the colleges.

but it's great I can do Psychology in the 3rd year.

Re: Oxford or Cambridge: Medicine?Well, i feel dumb now(Original post by theandyguthrie)
You can't do a combined medicine degree, it's completely different to any other degree.
but thanks for telling me (;

Re: Oxford or Cambridge: Medicine?What area of psychology are you interested in? In general Cambridge has a better psychology faculty (at least experimental psychology faculty).(Original post by coffeeaddict123)

As for the difference between the Oxford and Cambridge course: there will be more similarities than differences. Here are a few of my thoughts on the Cambridge course. At the end of the day you just need to spend a time comparing the two courses and deciding which suits you best -
Re: Oxford or Cambridge: Medicine?I'm interested in the emotions of the human mind, how to people react in different situations, what part of the brain contributes to a persons emotions. The mental problems people have and what medicines do you have to take etc. I will be looking at your thoughts and are you going to cambridge?(Original post by It could be lupus)

Re: Oxford or Cambridge: Medicine?I've just graduated from Cambridge (Preclinical Medicine with Experimental Psychology in 3rd year). I've just noticed you are starting your GCSE's so it is probably a bit early to look at areas of interest in psychology. From what I've heard A level psychology is very different to uni level. If you are looking at atypical psychology then Cambridge has Simon Baron-Cohen which is a big plus. As for reacting in situations that is more social psychology-there is a module for that in the part II tripos but it isn't very popular. As for a persons emotions, your basic neurological sciences which you will do in your preclinical years will give you an idea of what areas of the brain are responsible(Original post by coffeeaddict123)

and how is A-Level phychology different from UNI?

Re: Oxford or Cambridge: Medicine?I can't say as I didn't do A level psychology but I have heard it is just bulk learning (though most A levels are). And i can't say whether it is good for medicine or not, as it depends on the individual. If you look at my previous post I have linked to a previous post of mine which gave my thoughts on the course. It is entirely up to you whether you think the course will suit you or not(Original post by coffeeaddict123)
