    British sport celebrates mediocrity
When a swimmer finishes fifth they celebrate and go congratulations in a great swim. It doesn't have the killer edge it needs. In china they say if you don't win gold don't bother coming back and look at how well they do...because they have no choice.

Yeh they don't actually punish you for not winning gold in china. Well at least not anymore.

Yeah but they don't pat you on the back and congratulate you for finishing fifth. I swam in America for a bit and the coach said its about kicking people's butts never mind personal bests or trying your hardest. When you think youre trying your hardest try harder because it isn't good enough is what I was told.

Easy to criticize from your comfy chair Mr athletic. Many people could only dream of coming 5th in the Olympics. Still takes years of effort and hard work to get that far. Remember they are competing against the best in the world. People take the olympics too seriously. At the end of the day it's all about friendly competition, entertainment and doing the best you can. If china wants to use it as a method to secretly fight world war III then let them

This is true and its why we will never achieve anything significant.

The adulation Murray received for just making the Wimbledon final was astonishing. He didn't win so shouldn't be lauded.

    Who dreams of coming 5th?

You dream of winning anything less is a failure.

Achieve anything significant? A British rider just won the Tour de France recently, and another Brit came second.

But I guess it's not seem in the same light as Wimbledon, which is a shame.

It's not the pinnacle of Road Cycling for one. So you're wrong with that. Keep talking when you have no idea what you're talking about.

Because that's how everything is in Britain, they don't care about any other sports than the most popular ones. When you're a kid, if you're not playing football then you're weird.

Well OP, why don't you enlighten us all on your many sporting achievements which I'm sure put 5th place in an Olympic final to shame.

No I quit swimming because I didn't want to commit to it. I'm just saying their needs to be competition people competing to be the best at any cost. The labour party stopped any competition because they said and I quote "we dont want some kids better than others".

I don't think you can paint everybody with the same brush. Our expectations should be different depending on the athlete/team. For example if the British track cycling team don't win a medal it would be a massive dissapointment. However if an unknown youngster makes the final in their sport they will be congratulated.

You have to tailor your expectations for each individual athlete, and react to their performances according to the individual.

Ruta just won the 100 meter backstroke at 15.

She trains in ENGLAND, is trained by an ENGLISH coach at an ENGLISH club. Lithuania have nothing to do with her training.

So? She doesn't think like an English person, which makes the difference.

Every sport, the USA and China are going in to win it. We, the hosts, are going in "hoping for the best" which is ridiculous. Our athletes should be aiming to win every single even they're in, not being happy to have taken part. Don't get me wrong, I wholly respect the dedication and effort they've put in to get to the final in the first place, but it seems ludicrous to get that far and then not to want, or to feel you should, take first place.
