What is this (Chinese food found in freezer)?
Inherited some food from various people moving out - one thing that was in the freezer was a plastic bag full of white stuff, formerly owned by a Chinese girl. It's cut into chips, like you'd get from slicing a banana diagonally, and at first I thought it might be some kind of vegetable. But I tried cooking some (stuck it in some soup and boiled it for a few minutes), and it was more like really chewy pasta. Any idea what it is, and how you're actually supposed to cook it?

It's a long time since I've had squid so I can't really remember what it tastes like, but doesn't it usually come in rings rather than ovals?

    Yu Dan. Fish ball
But it is neither fishy nor ball-shaped.

Nah, pretty certain it's not bamboo (shame it's not, that stuff's way too good to waste on pandas ).

Nope. Looks like sliced banana (except white).

Agreed with the two above  Try frying it, I've had it in stir fries occasionally and it's quite nice. It goes crunchy rather than chewy.

'Really chewy pasta' sounds more like rice cakes than water chestnuts. If so, they're usually boiled in soups until they soften though you can stir-fry them as well. I don't know what they are called in Chinese but they're called 'ddeok' (although the spelling varies) in Korean so you could search for recipes that way or at least confirm that's what your mystery ingredient is.

Could they be prawn crackers? Drop one of these chips in hot oil and see if it puffs out.

Wouldn't need freezing though surely? I cant imagine them going off in their pre-cooked rock like state...
