    An academic job.

A graduate job (ie. one that hires bachelor's degree holders).

For specific PhD-level jobs outside of academia, sometimes there are, but it depends what your PhD is in.

PhD has a mix of Geography and Performing/Production Arts, I did a weird PhD, although not as weird as some that I've heard.

I have lectured the past year, and had a job for September, but there was a problem with the school that I had the job with, so now looking for something else.

That depends entirely on your field. For the vast majority, though, PhD is the highest qualification that may be attained.

That doesn't sound like the most marketable combination unfortunately, but I don't know much about either field so I can't say for sure.

Teaching is one option, but while the PhD and teaching experience would boost your CV it isn't strictly necessary, so I don't know if that would be a big downside for you.

Haha, I think it's funny someone that's just finished a phd has come to The Student Room to ask for advice about this. I think maybe your phd supervisor or anyone in the department at your university would be more in the know! Personally I think the next step is to become one of those people that churns out volume after volume academic books with painfully-difficult-for-an-average-undergraduate-to-understand style language. But I guess you could always just go and work in a pet shop or something.

I've done teaching, and that's caused me the current problem, I am tempted to see if a theatre needs anyone.

Worth a try, though theatre is a precarious profession even for the performers. Was your PhD vocational, or more about history and analysis of theatre? If the latter, museums might be a better bet.

    Doesn't make much money sadly.

Was looking at performance and production techniques, and how they moved over the world, had to put a bit of history in it, but then also had to have good sound knowledge of the techniques that I was writing about. Have got theatre and TV production experience, as well as theatre performance, but not done much for the past 5 years.

was offered the chance for NPQH from September whilst a school didn't have a head for 2 terms, this was so I could get the qualification, they now have a head who is starting earlier and don't require me and withdrew from allowing me to do the qualification. TBH I wasn't keen on the idea, it was more my local LEA wanted me to do it, so they could make use of me more on the LEA.

You have spent years at university in academia working on you PhD but miraculously managed to never hear colleagues, staff or other people talking about what to do after a PhD? That's like someone completing his A-levels and never having heard of universities ...

I really don't intend to offend you but it's hard to believe that someone having attained a PhD is totally unaware about further options

everyone has gone in to academia, why would they speak about other options, as the vast majority of PhD graduates also go in academia.

I don't know about the UK but here in Germany there is the 'Habilitation'. People who have already attained a PhD are allowed to teach at universities but in order to become a proper Professor (W1-W3) one has to have experience in teaching and present a thesis as well as examples of scientific work of a very high quality.

Is there some kind of equivalent for that in the UK?

But your question was whether there were any further qualifications ("anything higher/past a PhD"). Surely someone who has completed a PhD would know that there either are, or are not further qualifications in your particular field.

Contact your old university and set up a meeting with the careers department, perhaps, to discuss your options? Your PhD supervisors should be able to come up with a few ideas for you as well.

That sounds fairly similar to the UK. some PhDs don't go in to academia, but it's not common, I thought lecturing would be good and I'd enjoy it, but I don't.

I'm cross field, and all that got mentioned to me was about going in to academia and becoming a professor.

    Will look in to that.
