    People at work
Is it normal to only have a few people to speak to at work? I work for Next so obviously I work alongside a lot of people. Most of my colleagues are in their 20s and I'm not used to socialising with people older than me as I've never really had to until now (my first job). The majority of them have also been working there for quite a long time (e.g. more than a year) so have gotten to know practically everyone. I've only been working for about a month and I only work on two (maybe three) days since I'm a part-time..I feel like an outcast when I look at everyone and realise that they're in their little group of friends and I'm just by myself, not really belonging anywhere

At my job I work on a till on the second floor by myself. There is a post office across from me but they never talk across the shop floor, just among themselve. I talk to about three other people at my work properly and then just greetings with the others when I arrive and leave. I wouldn't say I'm particulary friends with any of them, also because I only work one day a week. I don't mind it. Just doing it for the money and leaving the end of this month for university.

Yeah I talk to like 2-3 people properly but I'm never in the same shift as them since we're all part time so all I see is the full timers who know each other well conversing and joking all day. I guess I was just wondering if what I was experiencing was normal or if I'm just secretly socially awkward

The vast majority of people at my work are polish. They also tend to speak polish with each other whilst at work. I feel your pain.

In my actual career I get on pretty well with most people at my level and would count a fair few as friends, but for most part time/temporary jobs I've had before I didn't really integrate into the social aspect of it. That's not to say I didn't get on with people, but breaktime conversations were hardly scintillating and I wouldn't see them outside work.

Tbh it's pretty inevitable given that you're generally only there sporadically/for a short time, there's often an age gap and I frequently don't have much in common with my co-workers.

Everyone in my work place speaks english though, I'm just too shy to talk to them But that is rather unfortunate. Have you tried speaking to any of them?

I think the age gap is a big barrier for me. I think I'm the youngest in my workplace...everyone is at least in their 20s with some already being married or engaged. But I guess it depends on the person as some people I just 'clicked' with and could talk to for hours. At least I know what to do next time I work at a different place I suppose

I am an apprentice and i barely talk to anyone. People say hi and that is about it, i see all my co-workers having a laugh with each other while i am alone.

Honestly, i think the reason why i am like this is because i have this 'I'm here to work, not make friends' mindset. This also applied to college and i think this killed what little social life i had.
