Cable/Satellite TV in Dorm Room (Pillar Box)?
From what I understand Coventry provides IP Freewire TV or something like that to all students that can be watched through their laptop/PC.
What if I wanted a TV in my room, are you allowed to have SKY TV/Virgin Media or whatever cable/satellite provider they use in Coventry installed? I would be ok with paying for the TV license. -
Re: Cable/Satellite TV in Dorm Room (Pillar Box)?Don't know anything about Coventry's accommodation, but most uni's will neither have the means to supply this service (no satellite dish on the building/no connection to VM's cable network), and they will not allow you or anyone else to install a satellite dish or cable.(Original post by djmano)

The freewire service is provided over the internet via a computer, so no aerials, satellite dishes, etc, are required to watch it. You do need a TV licence for it though.
If you want to watch it on your TV, the only way to do this would be to connect a TV to your computer. You may be able to get somewhere with freeview, with an indoor antenna, but you're unlikely to get a good signal indoors. That is, unless, they have an aerial socket in your room, connected to an outdoor aerial, you should get a decent freeview signal with that. -
Re: Cable/Satellite TV in Dorm Room (Pillar Box)?
lol im sure having television is probably not very high on the priority list of most college students (and shouldn't be, shame on myself) but did a little research and here's what i found.
i assumed what NewFolder mentioned is true, so that would leave freeview TV with an indoor aerial (antenna) unless i can somehow mount an outdoor antenna somewhere without getting in trouble. then i would have to buy a DTR box/receiver and subscribe to a pay TV service like top up TV. as a sports fanatic i instantly was drawn to the sports pack which includes ESPN, sky sports 1 and 2 for 40 pounds a month.
that is insane! you only get 3 channels for what an entire basic cable/satellite package costs here in the states. anyway even with the DTR and pay TV service you are still limited by the ability of your aerial to receive signal so ill have to ask other students at coventry if they have any success using an indoor aerial.
do they show english premiership games on IPTV/freewire? i figure if im going to live in the uk for a year im going to have to learn to love football.
i have always thought it rather glamorous to be able to watch a channel called 'Sky Sports.'

Sports channels are usually optional on most TV services, and are very expensive to add. Same goes with movie channels. Don't know why this is.
A lot of football games will be shown on BBC and ITV channels, which you can get on Freewire, so you should be OK.
If you can't find a way to watch Sky Sports in your room, most pubs in the country will have it on usually. The student union may have it on at certain times.
