Sims 2 or Sims 3, and STEAM question
    Which would you recommend?

Also should I buy it on steam or from amazon

whats the deal with buying things on steam? is there any catch like a registration/ongoing membership fee?

Can't comment on Sims 2, but I have played Sims 3 and it's quite good.

Whether you should get it from Steam or Amazon depends largely on the prices at the two different stores. Also, with steam, you just have to wait for it to download, then you can play. With Amazon, you have to wait for it to be delivered. You may also have to pay P&P with amazon.

There is no catch with steam. I downloaded 7 Grand Theft Auto games for £4.99 from them last week, and they are all perfectly working full versions of the games.

Before I played sims 3 I played sims 2, and I have to say sims 2 is better in terms of things to do but sims 3 is more advanced for example with pregnancies and reduced loading.
However it also depends if you plan on buying expansion packs. If you don't plan on buying expansion packs then go for sims 3

I've played both, and I'd say go for Sims 2, but with me it might just be a novelty thing, but I find it so much more enjoyable, plus Sims 2 and all it's expansion packs are cheaper than Sims 3.

Sims 3 is far superior. If you buy from Steam its download only. No there is no catch with Steam. They regularly have sales. If you buy expansion packs they are automatically downloaded with the base game - which can be annoying. For example if I don't want Sims 3 Pets because it's lagging my PC, I just want to install the base game, I can't, its automatically downloaded together. Yes I have this problem currently.

With Amazon you get a physical copy of the disk and you can choose not to install all expansions etc. Cons are if the disk was to get scratched or broken you've lost your chance of a reinstall anytime soon.

I would personally say Sims 2 as it was the first sims game that really caught my interest but also because I've had three years of fun with it!

It's also dirt cheap too - £12 on Amazon for Double Deluxe (this contains an expansion pack, stuff pack and Sims 2 base game).

From what I understand of Steam, there's no 'catch' - you just get to digitally download the game. That's great if you're someone who dislikes looking after manuals, CDs and game boxes but I prefer having a physical copy just in case Steam's servers go down (that does seem very unlikely however).

I have all the Sims 2 expansion packs and most of the stuff packs bar three - all together I spent roughly £90, bearing in mind the fact that this was over a two year time frame with frequent checks to EBay.

With the expansion packs and stuff packs of Sims 2, you can have seasons, go to holiday resorts, have your own business, create apartments, go to university, become a vampire or witch or werewolf, own pets, use IKEA items, wear clothes from H&M, have alien children, get frightened by ghosts, have your own zombie apocolypse and more.

However, Sims 3 is 'better' in the sense that there are less loading screens and your sims live their lives even when you're not playing the game (if you micro-manage like me, that feature isn't very appealing).

With Sims 3 you can also have pets, apartments, go to holiday resorts, live through certain professions such as fire-fighting and own Katy Perry themed items along with some Diesel stuff. A new expansion pack called 'Supernatural' will be out soon which will allow you to become most of the paranormal stuff from Sims 2 in more depth except become an alien - you could however, become a fairy.

Both games have a great modding community out there so you're not stuck with the limits that either game imposes on you. Some well known creators/modders for Sims 2 are Pescado, twojeffs, pooklet whilst some Sims 3 ones are NRaas and twallan. Definitely check out www.modthesims.info

Whatever you choose, make your system can handle either game!
