What is meant by networrk maintenance?
actually I may have worded the title wrong as obviously it means maintain the network but in what ways is this done? like what things are checked and how are they checked etc. if anyone could give me a link with info that would be good as whenever I look on google all I get are websites of people trying to sell a service.

Network maintenance is the setting up and constant support of a computer networking infrastructure. It requires a specialist and in-depth knowledge of computer network technologies; for example both in the open protocols, such as TCP/IP, and with the usually proprietary software on the routers. It's not a small subject area and requires a very large skill-set. For more information, look at the Cisco CCNA qualification for examples of learning material.
