    Holiday during term time?
I'm thinking of taking a holiday for a week in January during term time. This will be during my first year of university. Is it likely that I will be able to catch up on work or not? I'm studying psychology if that is any use. I also heard that I will only get 8 hours of lectures in a week. Thanks for any advice.

It's not a matter of how many contact hours you have per week, it's a matter of how much work you have to do (probably 30+ hours). All in all it wouldn't be recommended, but you're an adult and can make your own choices, even bad ones.

Depends upon what university you go to but January is usually a time when you take your first exams. It may be possible to fit one in if your exams were few and early into it without having to miss lectures.

If it doesn't coincide with exams, or you do not have coursework for the period after, then I cannot see a problem. As long as you understand it's down to you, and only you, to catch up on the work.

I've taken time off and it's never been an issue for me, but I did always prefer self-study.

    Why

You get plenty of holiday time ... surely it makes sense not to go away in term time

Hey - I went on holiday during my ten day reading week in November, and that was somewhere nine hours away. I wouldn't reccommend it - it was very stressful. I had to literally finish classes in central London at 5, head straight to Heathrow for my 9pm flight. I had to take a lot of books with me as I had an essay due, but managed to complete it, but work was always on my mind.

I managed to catch up pretty quickly and spent about an hour or so each day doing my reading and caught up during the week I got back. It kind of spoilt my holiday, but it was the only time I could go and see my relatives in that particular country as monsoon is in the summer, whereas I can see my American relatives in summer as the weather is fine.

It really depends on whether you have any exams in January that you might miss, whether you can give these your full attention if you're going on holiday during the revision period, and whether your course has a minimum attendance requirement.

If you are going on holiday, it may be best to not mention it to any of your lecturers anyway, as they might be too happy with the arrangement.

I'm a hard worker so I could catch up but on the other hand I don't want it to be ruining my holiday! I have no exams during that period. Thank you for your thoughts guys!

I personally wouldn't recommend it because you have plenty of time off for holidays (3 weeks during Christmas, 3 at Easter and at least 2 months off during summer usually), you might fall behind and you might find yourself worrying about uni when you're trying to relax and enjoy yourself anyway.

Ultimately it's your decision, but if going on holiday in January is due to it being cheaper as it's low season, you do get a lot of time off where school kids are still in so you can get some good deals.
