Re: M113 - Motion regarding the situation in the Syrian Arab Republic
I am not concerned at all, in-fact I haven't even thought about Syria... don't even see it in the news... then again I suppose business news stations aren't the place to find general news

Let's be honest though, I am rather ignorant so this isn't at all unsurprising. -
Re: M113 - Motion regarding the situation in the Syrian Arab RepublicSummary of the news at the moment: Olympics, Olympics, Olympics and finally, something about hundreds of civillians being shelled and attacked with helicopters somewhere foreign. Comments on how this may affect the Olympics.(Original post by tehFrance)

Re: M113 - Motion regarding the situation in the Syrian Arab RepublicMr Speaker, I support the comments of the honourable gentlemen. Indeed military intervention should always be the last option. Increased diplomatic pressure should be placed on China and Russia, as the reality of the situation is that without the support of these two Security Council members, no serious progress can be made.(Original post by Morgsie)
Yes strongly support this, We must exert Diplomatic pressure and appy pressure on Russia and China. Chapter 7 Sanctions must be an aim.
Military Intervention must be a last resort and requires Authorisation
I have reiterated on many occasions, Mr Speaker, that change in Syria must come from within. No western led regime change can deliver the stability and democracy that the Syrian people demand. -
Re: M113 - Motion regarding the situation in the Syrian Arab RepublicMr Speaker, I welcome the support of the Foreign Secretary regarding this motion and acknowledge his efforts at the MUN, where the Rt Honourable Gentlemen has been involved in drafting a resolution on this situation.(Original post by toronto353)
I have continued to call for Assad to go in the MUN, but this motion should strengthen and confirm the resolve of this House for Assad to go. I welcome and support this motion.
Mr Speaker, I look forward to working with the Rt Hourable Gentleman in order to make sure we find a peaceful and diplomatic solution to this extremely worrying situation. -
Re: M113 - Motion regarding the situation in the Syrian Arab RepublicMr Speaker, the lack of optimism that the honourable lady displays, worries me incredibly.(Original post by SciFiRory)

this motion is incredibly hypocritical and simplistic, I also highly doubt that Assad gives a flying **** what the government of the UK thinks about him. -
Re: M113 - Motion regarding the situation in the Syrian Arab RepublicMr Speaker, I am willing to work with my counterpart on this issue to ensure that we have cross party support and consensus for our policy towards Syria. I thank the Honourable Gentleman for acknowledging my efforts in the MUN.(Original post by eff01)

Re: M113 - Motion regarding the situation in the Syrian Arab Republicit's called living in the real world...if you want to pretend that the Olympics will bring about gender equality and that this motion will bring peace and prosperity to Syria then by all means have fun with that, but in terms of real world relevance it's a bit like making a bill calling for Unicorns to stop being mean to Leprechauns...(Original post by eff01)

Re: M113 - Motion regarding the situation in the Syrian Arab RepublicWhile all true, and I agree with the above - does it merit opposing the motion? I mean, does it do any harm? If it doesn't do any good and any harm then we can vote on it purely based upon it's sentiment, which is a nice one.(Original post by SciFiRory)

Re: M113 - Motion regarding the situation in the Syrian Arab RepublicI don't see what difference it makes either way tbh, though it bothers me that this motion is incredibly hypocritical tbh.(Original post by jesusandtequila)

Re: M113 - Motion regarding the situation in the Syrian Arab RepublicHow is it hypocritical? We are condemning the brutal killings, asking al Assad to go and be held accountable for his actions.(Original post by SciFiRory)

Re: M113 - Motion regarding the situation in the Syrian Arab Republicdid we also condemn killings done in Saudi Arabia? by Israel against the Palestinians? by ourselves and the USA against Iraq and Afghanistan? I am pretty sure we did not...(Original post by eff01)

Re: M113 - Motion regarding the situation in the Syrian Arab RepublicYou misunderstand me, indeed I have opinions on those issues and you can happily debate these issues in the ask the Foreign Sec thread where I and I'm sure Toronto will debate over the issues you have highlighted. This motion is about Syria but that doesn't mean TSR Labour are ignoring the issues in Palestine, drone strikes in Pakistan, political situation in KSA/Afghanistan. I look forward to debating these issues with you.(Original post by SciFiRory)
