Re: Have many medical students got into medicine without doing the EPQ?There is nothing wrong about an applicant taking EPQ purely because he/she finds it interesting even if it doesn't help in the slightest in the application.(Original post by Richyp22)
Everything a medical applicant does should help them if its going on their Personal statement?Fact.
If its not going on Ps then oviously it doesnt need to help them. -
Re: Have many medical students got into medicine without doing the EPQ?The thread starter is clearly talking about epq In reference to if it helps in getting into medical school.(Original post by . . .)

So what your saying is irrelevant. -
Re: Have many medical students got into medicine without doing the EPQ?No she was just asking whether she should do it or not. Just saying the the majority of students get in without it without properly analysing the advantages and disadvantages of it isn't that useful.(Original post by Richyp22)

Re: Have many medical students got into medicine without doing the EPQ?Fair enough(Original post by . . .)

They are both pretty far off the mark. -
Re: Have many medical students got into medicine without doing the EPQ?It's basically a research project type thing. You create a title for your project it can be anything you want and then spend the year researching it and produce an end product for example a 5000 word essay with referencing and stuff and then you have to give a presentation on it. It's all independent but you have a supervisor that just checks whether they think that you're project is possible in the time frame and occasionally gives you advice and pointers.(Original post by tpxvs)

From what I've read it is usually an interesting topic that comes up in interviews if you have done it.Last edited by . . .; 01-08-2012 at 18:09. -
Re: Have many medical students got into medicine without doing the EPQ?
don't do it if it will affect your grades. your grades should take priority over everything else tbh. yes, it's amazing if you do the EPQ, 4 volunteering posts, a part time job and are a professional gynmast, but if you miss your grades on results day, they won't help then.
if you can manage it and are actually interested in doing independent research and writing up about it, then of course, it's up to you, but don't do it on the human genome project cause i'm pretty sure over half of medicine applicants do it on that and whenever i've spoken to admissions officers, they said all they hear about is research on the human genome project!
i never did the EPQ as it wasn't available at my school, but i did do a Nuffield bursary placement, which is very different to the EPQ as it involves you actually participating in research, rather than just learning about it, however at the end of it, i had to write up a scientific report and presentation. i did this during september/october time at the beginning of upper sixth, and towards the end of it, it got quite stressful and was eating into my homework/revision time quite a bit. so just approach the EPQ with caution and try to manage your time well.
