Maths for Imperial Chemistry??????????????
I want to apply for chemistry at Imperial. However by the time I finish year 13 I will only have AS maths. It says on the entry requirements that A level maths is required so would AS maths be sufficient??? I am also doing Biology, chemistry and Physics.
Also I have been hearing from quite a lot of people that chemistry isn't that competitive to get into even at top unis, is this true?
Thanks in advance

Re: Maths for Imperial ??????????????
Almost certainly not. I don't just say that as a 'well, they might let you in but probably won't.
I would feel at an advantage having done further maths. Physics and biology by contrast were next to useless.
I'd go as far to say that A level maths is the most important A level you can do for a chemistry degree at Imperial. More so than A level chemistry! -
Re: Maths for Imperial Chemistry??????????????
If it says A-level Maths, that's what you need.. although if you have good reasons why you want to do the course and why you can't do A2 maths, you could have a chat with the admissions tutor before applying, from my experience, they're sometimes willing to bend the rules.

Re: Maths for Imperial Chemistry??????????????The thing is I am not bad at maths I got an A in GCSE maths with just honestly hardly any preparation. I just didn't want to take 4 AS subjects because I wanted to focus on just 3. I didn't think I was going to be doing chemistry at university.(Original post by Creative)

So I am doing AS maths next year in year 13. Also I am good at physics too, and the maths in physics I think is very straightforward. -
Re: Maths for Imperial Chemistry??????????????For your information its not all physical chemistry !! there's organic, inorganic, Electrochemistry, medicinal chemistry ect. Also I did Quantum physics and I throughlly enjoyed it , and I just like physics in general. However I like chemistry more than physics.(Original post by T.Adams VI)
What do you expect, chemistry is a physical science. At a theoretical level, chemistry is essentially just applied physics. -
Re: Maths for Imperial Chemistry??????????????Chemistry (as with every other course at Imperial) requires A LOT of Maths. You may use hardly next to no Maths in A Level chemistry (and even in A Level Physics =\ ) but that won't be the same when you study it at degree level.(Original post by opengeek)

My girlfriend wanted to study engineering but had only decided on this after AS (and she hadn't taken Maths at that point). She managed to persuade the head of Maths to allow her to do the full A Level and she pulled off an A and got into her insurance.
Point is, if you intend to study Chemistry, you'll need to take Maths (and preferably FMaths). If you haven't taken it at AS yet, see if you can do the full A level next year. If you need to, drop bio.
