Re: events you want removing from olympicsI would miss it at London 2012 yes.(Original post by Ice Constricter)
Yes but would you actually miss it? -
Re: events you want removing from olympicsBut in some sports you would see a big drop off in quality by doing that, and then the people who are trying to become true greats miss out on medals because they get silver every year, but each time lose out to someone who's done a massive technique and aerobic block of 18 months say, then a long long taper of 5-6 months into the championships. It'd be a different person every time, but you'd miss out on seeing the best of the best pushing their bodies to the limits they can get to.(Original post by mikeyd85)
See, I'd rather have it so athletes aren't on a 4 year cycle. To become a true great would require you to be able to maintain a sufficiently high standard but to also not burn out. I've never been a huge fan of peak and trough training tbh.
Now that we (finally) have enough channels to watch the sport of our choice, I think it'd be really interesting to compare said championships to the Olympic figures. I don't doubt what you say there, I'd just like to see those figures compared.
Yeah, the TV stats will be interesting. More notable I think is the sponsor money. Corporations like P&G, McDonalds etc. won't pay huge money to tie themselves long term to a certain sports world champs, they will to link themselves to the Olympics. -
Re: events you want removing from olympics
I agree with football (or perhaps just mens football). Or at least rethink it.
Perhaps only those that aren't professional footballers, so semi-pro or youth talent... I dunno.
It's just not held in a high enough regard, nor is it the biggest deal to win compared to other sports. As a kid you dream about lifting the world cup as captain of your country, not a gold medal for Team GB. -
Re: events you want removing from olympicsWell most wouldn't considering good football already exists elsewhere.(Original post by TRS-T)
I would miss it at London 2012 yes. -
Re: events you want removing from olympicsThat's what I think. Nations that are very strong at swimming (USA, Australia, China...) can win up to 32 (!!!) gold medals. Other nations that are good at let's say Hockey can win 2 medals at max. They should definitely cut it down a little bit.(Original post by RyanT)
I think swimming should be cut down a little bit, say two distance events per style rather then the current (4?). -
Re: events you want removing from olympicsHmmm... you certainly raise a very valid point there - the people competing at one level would be disadvantaged against the peakers. Even so, I don't think we'd lose too much in terms of entertainment - especially for athletics. A few tenths over 100m if barely anything, a few metres off the best throw ever etc... So long as the competition is close, the actual feat of achievement is somewhat moot.(Original post by roh)

Re: events you want removing from olympicsIt may be equally entertaining, but it means that the person standing on top of the podium may not be the actual best in their field, which surely defeats the purpose of sport?(Original post by mikeyd85)

If everyone knows that the best in the world is actually in BronzeSilver, where he/she will next time when the people in Gold/Silver have vanished as they did a more extreme training cycle surely it removes a lot of the interest?
People watch it to follow individuals like Phelps and Bolt and the reason they originally got attention is because they won gold. People are interested in the winner, but if that winner will never be at that level again they're less likely to follow the sport at the next Champs to come around. -
Haha yes! And shame on them!(Original post by Davidcooper)
After yesterdays performance. Badminton.

Re: events you want removing from olympicsDepends on how you look at sport as a whole really. It's only got to the scale that it is because people like to be entertained. If a sport goes dull, people lose interest and stop watching (see Schumacher era F1 for example). I'm somewhere between thinking of sport as a competition and as a form of entertainment. I fully accept that not everyone sees it that way though!(Original post by roh)

It's been interesting chatting, but I gotta go now I'm afraid! -
Re: events you want removing from olympicsWhen I was younger I played it competitively for a while before I started with tennis.. Trust me, it's very exhausting and you have to be very focused. It takes a lot of skill. It deserves to be in the Olympics.(Original post by R4INBOW)
Ping pong. I'm sorry but that's a recreational activity, not something Olympic worthy.

Re: events you want removing from olympics
Those who are voting for equestrian obviously don't realise the effort and training that goes into it, probably even more than most of the other sports. The fact it's only for the upper class is bull, most of the time the riders don't even ride horses belonging to them and riding lesson cost no more than say swimming lessons or gymnastic lessons.
Going for football, myself. -
Agree.I play it and I know how difficult it is. But I will still list it to my least favorite Olympics games, because it becomes a game between Chinese and Chinese. I find it quite unfair for other athletes, they pay a lot too, but the best thing they can get is a silver medal and a chance to learn how to sing the national anthem of China(Original post by nightmare91)

Dressage is so technical and difficult you have absolutely no idea in the difficulty of making a horse respond in such a complex way whilst showing absolutely no signs of any effort. People watch horse riding and just think it's a case if just being able to stay on the horse whilst steering it as if you were on a bike.(Original post by SleepySheep)
The one with the horses and top hats, what's that all about
Equestrian is difficult and people are so clueless about it, it drives me nuts! -
