Re: events you want removing from olympicsGymnastics is one of the sports which has been in the Olympics since the beginning. Plus, the Olympics has always been and is by far the pinnacle of sporting acheivment for gymnasts.(Original post by Mother_Russia)
All sports which require a rating based on personal judgement. Such as gymnastics, synchronised swimming, etc. not that I don't enjoy watching these events, I just dont feel that they're fair to be judged at the Olympics

Re: events you want removing from olympics
I agree that football seems to have a massive following worldwide, but seeing that a) we have a World Cup and b) the Premier League seems to take up the majority of the year, Olympic football just doesn't attract the same prestige. The World Cup, while having been around less, is far bigger than Olympic football. As to whether to drop it or not, I don't know. I don't really care either way.
Golf for 2016. Oh my God. I get so bored by golf sometimes. It's not as fast moving as many other sports (apart from eg shooting and archery, but at least then things are over quicker). Heck, even equestrian is more interesting. -
Re: events you want removing from olympicsI didn't say it wasn't difficult, I'd actually assume it's more difficult than many sports in the Olympics precisely because of what you just said. But the top hats are ridiculous and it's elitist crap.(Original post by EffieFlowers)
Dressage is so technical and difficult you have absolutely no idea in the difficulty of making a horse respond in such a complex way whilst showing absolutely no signs of any effort. People watch horse riding and just think it's a case if just being able to stay on the horse whilst steering it as if you were on a bike.
Equestrian is difficult and people are so clueless about it, it drives me nuts! -
Re: events you want removing from olympicsI don't care if they remove it or not, but it's not a sport like the others are. It's not competitive, you don't have a winner and a loser like you have in other sports, like a race or something.(Original post by ladymarshmallow)

There aren't any rivalries. It gets a bit boring after a while. -
Re: events you want removing from olympicsAgreed! People seem to assume that just because a horse is involved the rider is doing nothing! It's so frustrating that so many talented athletes are being overlooked because people don't understand the sport. We have great equestrian teams who just don't get the recognition they deserve(Original post by EffieFlowers)

Re: events you want removing from olympicsYes, it is competitive, you've seen people in tears over making the smallest of mistakes, and seriously, all you seem to want in the olympics are track and field events. Is that what you want?(Original post by Raiden10)

Are there any rivalries in 100m?? If so, i would argue that the rivalries in gymnastics are as much a rivalry in 100. About it being boring, that's completely subjective -
Re: events you want removing from olympicsA .22 LR single shot competition pistol, is hardly intimidating though, I think our government are still fools for not allowing our own team to practice in the UK with those pistols....but that's another topic...Still if you don't like guns, you simply don't like guns(Original post by Captain Jack)
Definitely shooting for me. I know it's a real skill but I simply don't like guns...
Shooting is one of the few events I will definetely watch personally, but i have interest in the sport, being in a club etc.
I couldn't really think of any sports to get rid of, all have some relevance, but I only watch the events that interest me, anyway. -
Re: events you want removing from olympicsyuck please remove.(Original post by Pensivedore)
Since golf is being reinstated, I'd like it removed now, before 2016. -
Re: events you want removing from olympicsIt doesn't matter how difficult it is. It's one of those things where you do it on your own, and then people say how well you did it. There's no real competition - you could do that on your own.(Original post by EffieFlowers)

Re: events you want removing from olympicsOn mobile broadband, so struggling to load that link...(Original post by mikeyd85)
They actually use "Laser pistols" now, which, IMO, takes some of the skill away from shooting. No wind, no gravity, no coriolis effect over longer range...

Edit: Olympic Golf? (From above).
That's not even a sport! It's a game. Might as well have Olympic darts and snooker...
I was under the impression the single shot .22 LR sporting pistols were still used? As I recall the competition was cleared to allow full bore pistols on that event (as full bore pistols are banned), but the GB team still wasn't allowed to train in the UK?
And at the range you shoot those pistols, hardly any of those effects come into play, surely? maybe wind, and the coriolis effect would never apply to a pistol imo :P maybe for a extreme long range sniper, or are they replacing all guns with those `laser things` -
Re: events you want removing from olympicsSport shouldn't be subjective, IMO.(Original post by desijut)

Rivalries in 100 metres, like Gay vs Bolt, now Blake vs Gay vs Bolt. Used to be Donovan Bailey vs Frankie Fredericks vs Ato Boldon, Linford Christie vs Carl Lewis.
No I just want events where you win and you lose. Not where you decide if you win or lose.
It's not just subjective events that are annoying. Swimming is a ****ing freak show. Peak at 15 and past it at 25 because your double jointed ankles aren't as floppy anymore.
I'm just saying some of the less famous events, you can bloody well see why they aren't as famous.Last edited by Raiden10; 01-08-2012 at 18:30. -
Re: events you want removing from olympics
I love football but really we have the Euros, World cup and Champions league all these events are more prestigious then an olympic gold, footballers have their chances to win big tournaments where as compared to Gymnastics theres the worlds but thats it. Football has enough tournaments already. The Olympics is not the pinnacle for footballers where as for sports like Gymnasts and Swimmers it is.

Re: events you want removing from olympicsAll this shows is that you have more knowledge in track and field than other events. No not even track and field, just 100m(Original post by Raiden10)

Re: events you want removing from olympicsOf course it's competitive, pretty sure they all fancy a medal.(Original post by Raiden10)

This could be said for practically all Olympic sports. I don't know anything about gymnastics so there probably are rivalries, mostly between the countries like USA, Russia and China for example. That's what I'd presume anyway. There aren't any rivalries.
Personal opinion though. It gets a bit boring after a while. -
Re: events you want removing from olympics
None, but there are too many swimming events (should only be the current freestyle & medley ones, no more specific strokes) 34 events in swimming is too many. Apart from that everything should stay the SAME, so no golf in 2016. I don't care about Rugby 7's as much but still think its not an Olympic sport.
But serious why would they want to introduce GOLF? Golf is the most boring of all sports.
Not interested in archery or shooting to be honest.
