    working while at uni
I should hopefully be starting uni this year at a university about 40mins away, i'm currently working and my boss has asked be if i want to continue working but only weekends once i go to uni. The travel costs are low so im not bothered about that, but im worried that by going home every weekend i will be missing out on something back at uni.

Has any one else gone home every weekend? Do you think it impacted on anything?

are you living in halls? it will no doubt impact your social life, the weekend is when most of the socializing will go on.

I don't know who negged the last poster, he speaks the truth. Going home every weekend will definitely affect your social life, who wants to make friends with someone they'll barely see? I think you should try getting a job in your uni town, and I don't think it'll affect your studies, as long as you don't work too many hours, and think about cutting them down near exam time..

Being away from uni will prevent you from being a member of some societies, as activities often happen on weekends. You will also need to do uni work over the weekend.

    Some questions to ask yourself
    - do you need the money?
    - could you get another job in your uni town, and then quit your old job?
    - will the travel time still make it worth it?

Think this needs to be put in perspective rather than saying you'll have no fun....

Are you an active socialising person? Will your timetable be long? E.g. Some of my lectures finished round 4/5 I think (can't remember)...do you drink? Do you go clubbing?

Most people consider it a break from the stresses of uni... But that doesn't mean you cant hang out/socialise on the weekdays (though careful, you'll have lectures the next day).

All my societies were run during the weekdays

Though personally, I liked having the whole weekend to chill...

if you're a nonalcoholic, non clubbing introvert who isnt bothered with seeing friends on weekends and is capable of doing all work during the weekdays, and isn't bothered of chilling and just wants cash/to be more productive, then I can't really think of a reason to not work on weekends...

Though I agree with the suggestions made with origiami above...

To be honest to me, weekends were often the time when my friends and housemates crashed and caught up with work. Nothing much ever happened as going out over the weekend is expensive. I did occasionally go away for the weekend with societies or maybe go on a trip or something so you might miss out on that kind of stuff. It really depends on what societies and other stuff you get involved in to be honest.

I would suggest giving it a try and if it doesn't work out for you you can always leave or just work during the holidays.

How much does it cost for you to do this 40 minute journey? I really wouldn't recommend going home for the whole weekend, I know someone who did and really regretted it, however if it would still work out well if you traveled home to work then came straight back to uni then it could work as you'd be just like the people who have part-time jobs at uni. If you worked something like 11-4pm each day then it'd be like working 10-5pm with the travel times and if it's it's something like a £5 return then you'd still be making just under £20 a day or more if you're not on minimum wage.

Edit: However I would then recommend trying to get a job in your uni city to replace it and I'd only suggest doing it in the first place if you needed the money.

The price of a return is just under £6, i think im going to try it out for a few weeks and if its too much i will finish and only work holidays.

    thanks for everyones thoughts

Couldn't you compromise by working every other weekend?
