Does anyone know good ways of distinguishing between the Golgi apparatus and the smooth endoplasmic reticulum?

Not really, but they're unlikely to ask you that unless there's an obvious difference. Little tricks that might help - location (Golgi usually closer to membrane) and look for vesicles budding off/between layers.

Yeah Golgi and ER are pretty distinct so you shouldn't have any problems identifying them on electronmicrographs. Golgi reminds me of a stack of pancakes...well kinda lol.
