Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games?they lost out when bidding for both the 1996 and 2000 olympics.(Original post by ManBearPig2011)
Think it was the 2000 games they bid for
There are other UK cities more than capable of hosting the Olympics even after a little spruce up of their transport systems.
However the further north of London you go it becomes trickier to get to and with all due respect as great as Manchester and Glasgow are, they aren't international global cities. Sure Manchester and Glasgow are international airports but they aren't major interchanges like London and not as linked up to the rest of the continent. The climate is unreliable in Northern England and both Manchester and Glasgow have some way to go before they can be considered truly global cities. I say this as a Mancunian born and bred, other than football or shopping or clubbing there is not much else to do in Manchester from a tourist viewpoint. It's not a centre of the arts or culture brimming with world-class museums, galleries or tourist sites like London and the metrolink has only just expanded.
IOC want Olympics hosted in cities which will pull in the crowds from both a sporting and tourist aspect and cities like Beijing, London, Rio, Athens all tick those boxes.
That's not to say a non-London city could host the games. I think Manchester is in a much better position now than it was when it bid for the 96 and 2000 Olympics as would be Glasgow.
Realistically I don't the see the games coming back to Europe until 2024 as it looks like Tokyo is on course to snatch the 2020 games.
Even then London would have had to have staged a truly awesome games to convince the IOC to bring the Games back to the UK similarly to when the games were in LA in 1984 and Atlanta 1996. But the UK doesn't boast cities on the scale of the US.
Also given that we're stuck in a recession it seems unlikely we will be bidding again which is a shame. I always dreamt of seeing the Olympics hosted in Manchester one day but I think I will be long gone before it even returns to the UK.
I wouldn't be surprised to see London host it a 4th time. -
Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games?Well they haven't put in a bid and I'm sure the IOC would want it in Africa but yeah they can't award it to them if they don't bid.(Original post by gagaslilmonsteruk)
I'd quite like to see an African country get it if I'm tbh. South Africa did a good job of the World Cup in 2010 -
Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games?Thats what they said before the Manchester Commonwealth Games in 2002. And guess what? Unlike the southern nancies their games came in well under budget, not to mention they had secured contracts for the various buildings (see Man City buying the main stadium) before a single batch of cement was mixed. In fact, I'd put money on the success of those games being the main reason we aren't watching Paris 2012 at the moment.(Original post by Bellissima)
LOL anywhere other than london hosting it would suck... can you imagine "Manchester 2050" "Liverpool 2046"... how crap would that be...
Of course with all the London centricity we'll never see the UK games held anywhere else, especially Scotland. -

Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games?Of course. Manchester 2002 is one of the reasons we won the 2012 Olympics.(Original post by Butane)

Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games?Doubt it. Barcelona has a much bigger urban area & population. It had much better sporting infrastructure left over from the 1982 football world cup, and I imagine its transport network was probably far more comprehensive. Not to mention it is far, far more cultural.(Original post by TRS-T)
I dunno if it was but you'd hope that was the case when you consider that they are both the Second City of their respective highly-developed European countries.Last edited by YMLT; 01-08-2012 at 15:23. -
Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games?Nairobi 2028 is probably the first chance of an African games. Kenya want 'developed nation' status by then, so the Olympics would certainly help that and the IOC would probably be keen on the whole on the whole development thing like FIFA were.(Original post by gagaslilmonsteruk)

Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games?Istanbul are bidding for the Euros in the same year. It is looking like they will lean more towards that bid meaning they won't be able to host the olympics as the IOC wont allow it(Original post by Acidedge)
I see someone has updated the Summer Olympic Games Wiki entry with Tokyo, Madrid and Istanbul today! It wasn't there when I looked earlier.
I can't believe it'll go to Madrid, with the state of the Spanish economy at the moment, but I wouldn't count Istanbul out of the runnings. The Japanese hosted the Summer Games in 1964 and the Winter Games in 1972 and again in 1998, so it would be "fairer" to give the games to the Turks. -
Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games? What is that supposed to mean?(Original post by YMLT)

Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games? Why? Liverpool is a great city, half the opening ceremony was based around Liverpool stuff - The Beatles, industry and so on.(Original post by Bellissima)
LOL anywhere other than london hosting it would suck... can you imagine "Manchester 2050" "Liverpool 2046"... how crap would that be... -
Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games?Because 99% of it is a **** hole tbh (thats coming from someone who's been to Liverpool hundreds of times and half my family lives there, so im not just bashing).(Original post by Organ)

Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games? They went for both. 1996 and 2000. Birmingham went in 1992.(Original post by ManBearPig2011)
Think it was the 2000 games they bid for
People say that it was these bids failed that persuaded the BOA to go for London to bid for the games and it seems to have paid off.
Manchester and Edinburgh have staged very successful Commonwealth games but they're involving considerably fewer countries and fewer sporting disciplines. -
Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games?Norwich would really complete this list(Original post by Soft Cat)

There is more culture in Barcelona.
Ignore that, I'm seeing things. But still, depends what you see as 'culture' or 'cultured'.Last edited by original_username; 01-08-2012 at 15:24. -
Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games?True.(Original post by Organ)
