Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games? No I didn't. I said Barcelona was far, far more cultured. (I meant cultural, my apologies.)(Original post by original_username)
That's not what you said. You said Birmingham is far, far from cultured. What's that meant to mean? -

Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games? They don't need to be, but if the Olympics will regenerate a huge area of the city (with the plan being that it's a permanent affect, not just during the games) then that's seen as a positive.(Original post by Thatguy1)
I got told that the Olympics are meant to be in places that need developing and the host borough in London was one of the poorest areas in the UK before the got the Olympics

Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games? To be fair, before it got the games, Barcelona was quite a grim, ugly industrial city for the main part. The investment and legacy of the olympics allowed it to transform a lot of its public space and build a lot of museums, sculptures etc that really helped kickstart more tourism there.(Original post by Organ)
lol. Birmingham vs Barcelona.
Although having a famous sculptor from the city, better weather and not being as grim as Birmingham probably helped the bid! -
Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games?I think you'll find it is.(Original post by thecookiemonster)
Lol Birmingham is not the Uk's second city
1 million people live in Birmingham. -
Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games?Several things(Original post by + polarity -)
What does that entail?
Origins of the modern Olympics.
Doping in sport.
Disability classification in sport.
The Court of Arbitration for sport.
Middle Eastern sport.
Women in sport.
Case studies on several Olympics: Beijing, Vancouver, London etc
Suprisingly it was very interesting.

Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games? Why not host it in Slough for good measure...(Original post by TRS-T)
Birmingham should host it since we are the Second City of the UK. -

Why not host it in Slough for good measure...
Slough?
Slough is a small town somewhere down south...
Birmingham is the Second City of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. -
Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games?I wouldnt call 205,000 people within the greater urban area of slough that small but regardless i wasnt pointing to its size...(Original post by TRS-T)

Despite being the 'Second City', Birmingham is a ****hole. -
Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games? An unofficial title that means diddly squat. And meaning less and less as the years go by as Manchester starts to overtake it.(Original post by TRS-T)

The Olympics have more chance of being held in Birmingham Alabama than Birmingham UK.
Not at all. Rio isn't the capital. Sydney isn't the capital. Barcelona isn't the capital. Atlanta isn't the capital. It's just normally coincidental that the capital is the largest city and the best connected, but it's by no means a rule.(Original post by acer0951)
Correct me if I am wrong but isn't it the capital city of the host country? So China was Beijing and Brazil is going to be Rio 2016 then it has to be london right?Last edited by Drewski; 01-08-2012 at 18:11. -
Re: Is any other UK city allowed to host the olympic games? It often is, but only because the capitals tend to have the best existing infrastructure etc.(Original post by acer0951)
