Re: It should be Team UK not Team GBYou took the words right out of my mouth. :P(Original post by aspirinpharmacist)
Team GB has a better ring to it. And being "Great Britain and Northern Ireland" makes us sound more, well, great.

Re: It should be Team UK not Team GBThe point is that 'Britain/British' has different connotations to 'Great Britain/Great British'.(Original post by hannah60000)
Oh and the crown dependencies are part of the British empire so Team GB is suitable
It is all quite simple. We have the British Crown, the British army etc. not the Great British Crown/army.
British is commonly used as the genitive adjective form of 'the UK' i.e. referring to belonging to or native to the UK. Due to that, Britain is sometimes used as a synonym for the UK. Great Britain, on the other hand, is nearly always used to refer to the island consisting of Scotland, England and Wales.
The British Empire is a completely anachronistic term. In any case, the Crown Dependencies are part of the British Isles but are not part of Great Britain and never have been so your point doesn't really hold. They are British Crown Dependencies and not Great British Crown Dependencies.
This is why I think 'The British Team' would be a much better designation. -
Re: It should be Team UK not Team GBNorthern Ireland doesn't really have a flag as such. The St. Patrick Saltire (the red X) is often used to represent NI as it is less politically sensitive than other flags.(Original post by callum9999)
Northern Ireland is represented on the Union flag with a red cross (X), with the + being England and the rest being Scotland. I don't believe it actually has a flag of its own.
Ironically, the St. Patrick Saltire was originally used to represent the island of Ireland (i.e. Eire and NI together) since the Union Flag was created at the time of the union of the formerly united Ireland with Great Britain since this union of course, happened before Irish independence.
In answer to an earlier comment, the reason that Wales isn't represented on the Union flag is that Wales was originally considered to be a part of the English Kingdom rather than a nation in its own right: the earlier unification of Great British kingdoms was a two-party (England and Scotland) rather than three-party unification. -
Re: It should be Team UK not Team GBWe use the Union Jack now.(Original post by TRS-T)
What is Northern Ireland's flag?
There's a bit about the history and stuff here: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/North...nd_flags_issue
As it stands, though, people from NI are able to choose whether to represent the UK or Ireland. Many choose the latter, particularly for World Cup football etc because there's a better chance of being chosen to play/compete due to the lower population. -
Re: It should be Team UK not Team GBWe are officially GB and Northern Ireland but from a branding point of view and the shortened form we are referred to as Team GB which encompasses all really. I doubt anyone in the know would overlook the home nations. If so then they're a moron.(Original post by TRS-T)
England + Scotland + Wales = Great Britain
Great Britain + Northern Ireland = United Kingdom
By using the name Team GB we are excluding Northern Ireland.
We should be called Team UK. -

haha I like how you came back two minutes later to add the second part. While obviously your right I don't really see how its annoying, it annoys my dad though therefore if it is ever part of conversation I do it on purpose to wind him up.(Original post by alexandraa)
It is only called the union jack when it is flown in the bows of a warship
