Emergency.. Uni withdraw offer because "I failed to reply to their emails"
    Hi Everyone..
I chose to skip the introductions round because I am in panic mode. The Uni to which I applied just emailed two days ago to tell me they are withdrawing their offer because I did not reply to their email about fee assessment. The truth is I did not even see the emails in question in the midst of the million and a half junk mail I get daily. In the meantime, I kept receiving letters from the uni by post (Arrival guide, Orientation Guide..etc) but nothing concerning fees.
Can they just withdraw the offer because you did not reply to their emails? I thought something as huge as uni offer they will not deal with it solely by email. I know we live in the age of twitter and facebook but come on.. Any ideas?
I called the admissions offices as soon as I saw the email but they were close for the day. I have to call them tomorrow first thing in the morning and I am not looking forward to the anxious wait.. Any thoughts?

Yes I am a UK applicant, and their email was dated 31 July. Since I only saw the email today, I can only hope they did not give the place to someone else already. (Sorry for the mistake above, "two days ago" was meant to say yesterday. And thanks for asking for the thread to be moved.

Have you seen the number of places left? I think you should be safe

That doesn't sound right to me, why on earth would they withdraw because of you didn't reply to a 'fee assessment' you've confirmed your place on UCAS and as far as I'm concerned I think they aren't legally allowed to withdraw an offer unless they find out something incriminating against you.

Definitely ring them up and kick a fuss up.

You need to ring them ASAP and explain whats happened. As long as you confirmed your place on UCAS I don't see how they can withdraw your offer on the basis of not replying to an email, for all they know your internet could of been down for weeks or something! They should of tried to call you or something, I wouldn't panic as there has to be a way to sort it, it seems really out of order for them to send you an email when its about something as important as withdrawing an offer.

As has been said, call them tomorrow mornign 9am no excuses and in the mean time maybe write out everything you need to say to them. Do this on the comp so if you needed to send it as an email to someone for example you can do so straight away. If your a school leaver, can contact your school/ college for help in resolving the issue. Also, connexions maybe?

Hope all gets sorted and try not to worry til then!

    Thx guys for your replies.
YB101, I am planning on doing just that tomorrow. I will let you know what happens.
Ellasmith.. I know, I don't think they should withdraw offers because of a miscommunication issue, and especially not over email.. I assure you, that is EXACTLY what happened. I did not see their fee assessment form sent a long time ago (June apparently) but I don't think it matters. They wrote that "they assume I am not interested anymore". I will see what they have to say tomorrow. I can only prey they are understanding as YB says.

And Pshewit, that is exactly what I am worried about. I am sure there are not that many places left. Anyway, is there any way I can check how many places are left?

Fee assessment is very important which is why they may have overreacted as they are sending you letters it mite just be an error or an automated email gone wrong. Once you go through UCAS you both sign a contract and so i doubt they can withdraw like that. Lastly not everyone has email esp in summer holidays so if anything this can be a reason why you didn't reply. Calm down, i'm sure it is fine! Also they cannot give someone your place yet until clearing so a place, rightfully yours, is still free. Good luck!

Thx Samson, you are right, one cannot be expected to be on their toes in summeritme. I am hoping my place is still mine. But this was no automated email. It says "I am withdrawing your pace so it can be offered to someone else". That does not have the automatic ring to it...

It may very well be an arse-kicking email designed to get you to respond. Who are they going to offer the place to at this point? People don't have results yet, UCAS is closed for the year, clearing isn't yet open. I think they are tidying things up before the results scramble and they need to get your application properly sorted out. So I suspect it's just designed to scare you, which it has done, and provoke some action.

Having done admissions, though, it is massively irritating when people don't read emails. 'I lost it in all the junk mail', 'You can't expect me to be on my toes in the summer' all look like someone who's not taking things seriously. Do you want to go to university or not?

Fair Point Cora, but in my defense I would think that for something as important as university offer, care should be taken. I mean why would they send the welcome guide and other things by post but fee assessement form by email? Why then inform me of offer withdrawal by email? Don't I get a second chance or something? Haven't you ever had an important email not received, or not read in time or something? I was not expecting any urgency email-wise, and to be honnest with you I went on holiday. I would have thought they would ring me, or maybe send me a letter by post before withdrawing the offer.

And yes, I want to go to uni, you have no idea. I litterally stumbled on the email in question in the junkyard while doing some junkmail cleaning. Don't you think it's a little casual for something as serious as uni offer? Two emails, and zam, withdrawal of the place. For them, it's probably just one more student. A name, a number. Some file somewhere in a drawer. But for me it's the world. I still do not know what they will say tomorrow, and I hope as you say they only intend it as a wake up call.

Thx for your reply by the way. Very reassuring to know they can't fill the place just yet.

Just to add on to the comment from Honeyx above about having everything you want to say first written down so you can forward any information as necessary... When you are on the phone to the admissions office, make a note of what time you ring and who you are speaking to so that if you need to write any follow up emails you have more information regarding that contact. It's not as though, with a phone call, you can forward that correspondence on as you could an email. Also, I would, perhaps, ask for them to email you after the phone call to confirm everything they have said (particularly if it is positive) so that you have that as a confirmation, just in case!

I hope you get things sorted! Good luck

These days so much admin stuff is done electronically. If they send you a hard copy of the form, they then may have to digitise it when you send it back, and bits of paper also get lost. Far easier to move it around as an electronic file. I'm not sure it is any more casual than using the post these days- almost everything we get is just junk, and it goes days without being looked at because all the important stuff comes electronically.

As I say, with any luck, it's just intended to light a fire underneath you, and it'll all be sorted out tomorrow.

It might just be an overdramatic email on their part to get you to answer quickly. My uni do that with library fines, and send out emails saying you will be evicted from your accomodation and expelled from the university if you do not immediately rectify the massive debt you owe them (or similar scary words to that effect)

Well, if they intended to light a fire, they succeeded big time. It's like Alamo in here. I do not remember being this panicked in ages. I'll keep you informed. Thx everyone.
