That's extremely harsh. Every time a university has asked me about a fees assessment they always contacted me by post. I even had to post them my fees assessment application because it's one of those things you can't do online, since they need copies of your passport and things like that. Not only that, but I had MONTHS to send them the application back, so I don't see why they're making such a big deal out of it. Good luck!

Just the one email. And yes there was plenty of to and fro as far as others matters were concerned. So you are saying that if I show I was intending to take up the offer it will be ok. That would be easy, too easy even. I was at the Uni only a month ago...
I can't say for certain that it will be ok, but I think it would count in your favour. If it really was just a single email, they have no way of proving that you actually received it (unless you tell them of course, which may not be wise). If they failed to follow-up with further email reminders, and didn't contact you by phone or post, I don't see how this can be anything other than a wake-up call. All university departments will be finalising their numbers now, ready for results day, followed by clearing. If I had to make a prediction, I think you'll be OK, provided that you respond to their queries immediately.

Before you call the Uni, it may be worth calling your school's Head of Sixth Form and discussing your problem - it may not be the first time he or she has encountered this situation. I do recall someone in the year above me having an offer withdrawn, and the school successfully appealed it for him - but I don't know if the circumstances were the same as yours. But don't let attempts to contact a teacher become a cause of further prolonged delay - you need to call the Uni tomorrow morning, so that they know you are on the case.

If the Uni takes a firm line with you, ask them about the Appeals process (there is bound to be one). Make them believe you're going to pursue every avenue to make them change their mind - they will hopefully conclude it's easier just to let you in.

    Good, the VengefullMuff never fails!!

Good luck with the phone call, stand your ground and all that-there's more than one way of contacting you (like carrier pigeon for example) than e-mail.

Oh my gosh! I am so greatful of this thread right now!! I have just literally about 10 minutes ago received an email about finance from my university which I would have just discarded without filling in the details.

Re your problem though. I wouldn't sweat it seriously. I think it will just be a case of 'you have the wrong end of the stick' or failing that you didn't realise. I think it's just an empty threat really.

    Hi,

Was the university your firm/insurance offer, or did you just have the offer without having accepted it?
And have you checked UCAS track recently to see if anything has happened there?

The only answer I can think of to this is if you had an offer but had not made a reply, so the university wasn't your firm or insurance choice. All replies had to be sent to UCAS by 19th July otherwise UCAS auto reject everything on your behalf, which is why the uni might now be contacting you to say that they don't think you're interested etc.

If this isn't the case then obviously speak to the university and see what they have to say. There's no point contacting UCAS as this is an issue between you and the university, UCAS will only process what a university tells them to do or what they have to do in accordance with their dates.

That doesn't sound right to me, why on earth would they withdraw because of you didn't reply to a 'fee assessment' you've confirmed your place on UCAS and as far as I'm concerned I think they aren't legally allowed to withdraw an offer unless they find out something incriminating against you.

Definitely ring them up and kick a fuss up.
Incorrect Statement. There is no legally binding contract between you and the university until you enrol at the university. I mean come on if this was the case then students would be forced to go to university even if they didn't want to at the last minute.

You need to ring them ASAP and explain whats happened. As long as you confirmed your place on UCAS I don't see how they can withdraw your offer on the basis of not replying to an email, for all they know your internet could of been down for weeks or something! They should of tried to call you or something, I wouldn't panic as there has to be a way to sort it, it seems really out of order for them to send you an email when its about something as important as withdrawing an offer.
This and OP is a UK applicant so surely there's nothing to assess about fees...should be whatever that uni charges UK UGs.

My suspicions are as already mentioned that its the university's way of giving you a kick up the backside and making sure that you reply, so they at least know where they stand before the general chaos of results day and clearing etc. I'd have thought that if they were withdrawing your offer that it would have to be dealt with officially through UCAS Track, especially as its UCAS who notify you of the decisions and general progress of your application? Anyway, best of luck with them tomorrow! :crossedf:

Op just to let you know this happened to me. 2 weeks before i started i got an email to say my place had been withdrawn and my offer was an error on ucas. I was told to send everything back. I rang the department and there was no answer. A little later in the day i was sent another email to say it was an automatic email sent by mistake. Suffice to say i still rang up going ape ****. They just claimed to know nothing about it. Idiots.

Tip for the future: have two email addresses. One for special offers and facebook notifications or whatever, and the other for business/mega important things like UCAS and that. In the attempt to be paperless and eco-friendly (and save loads of money too) a lot of things you'd think would come by post come via email instead from various universities, meaning people miss out on stuff easily. (I did, and had accommodation issues.)

    Have you checked UCAS yet?

Definitely send an email to your head of sixth form/college etc.

Stay calm. I really doubt they can just take your offer away. They may not be legally bound by a contract, but they can't treat applicants so unfairly or it gets around and the uni gets a bad name. If they try, I'm sure your head of sixth form/college will be on your side and kicking up a fuss. They may become your best friend in times like these.

    Thx guys for your replies.
YB101, I am planning on doing just that tomorrow. I will let you know what happens.
Ellasmith.. I know, I don't think they should withdraw offers because of a miscommunication issue, and especially not over email.. I assure you, that is EXACTLY what happened. I did not see their fee assessment form sent a long time ago (June apparently) but I don't think it matters. They wrote that "they assume I am not interested anymore". I will see what they have to say tomorrow. I can only prey they are understanding as YB says.

And Pshewit, that is exactly what I am worried about. I am sure there are not that many places left. Anyway, is there any way I can check how many places are left?
what I meant was there are loads.... Take a look extra and clearing has almost every spot available

In fact there probably is a contract when an offer is accepted (see University College Salford v Moran which was a failed application for an injunction, but the court did agree that there was a contract. Afaik the case settled out of court before coming to full trial).

Universities would likely never sue students even if there was a binding contract, it would be terrible PR and they could probably fill places almost at the last minute anyway. But there is no good reason not to allow students to sue because the financial effect to them of having an accepted offer withdrawn at the eleventh hour could be massive.

SORTED!!! I have emailed last night just in case and I got a reply now, saying I still got it. I replied to that email, seeking some sort of confirmation and I got a reply to confirm it too. I still called them this morning but I am only getting the voicemail. Emails must have been sent from home or something..
Like many people said, it was a wake-up call of sorts. That said, I wonder what would have happened had I not seen the email..

Willbee, I do not even use facebook but from now I will be using a separate email for the uni.
Oxymoronic, the uni was my firm choice, the whole thing was wrapped up and there was no change on Ucas.

I am just happy I still have the offer. Thx everyone for your posts, you were extremely helpful.

It kinda gives you the creeps, doesn't it, that they don't realise the effects such things can have on you,

I don't think a university could actually sue the student, even if they wanted to. The universities offer is most likely a unilateral one (Good ole Mrs Carlil). So once it is made, the university cannot withdraw the offer, but the student can withdraw at any moment. The offer is conditional on two things. Firstly, getting the grade. Secondly, registering at the university. It's only once that is fully complete that the contract will be over, and a new contract is created - which is to pay the fees in return for education.

Hi I'm glad you got it sorted out! Miscommunications happen and can usually be sorted. In saying that, I'm surprised to read that some people see that their university has e-mailed them and just ignore it. Come on guys, you're in the world of grown ups now, these things are important!
