University of Nottingham Ningbo. A good one?
Hi guys im interested in doing my PhD. at the University of Nottingham Ningbo in China. I'm really interested in exploring China and brushing up my Chinese for my future career prospects.

Isn't good to immerse in a totally exotic Mandarin culture while studying in a programme that is taught in English?

1.I'm really curious to know about the quality of teaching there? The same standard as what is offered in the home campus?

2.Is the cost of living in Ningbo as high as in Shanghai? Geographically, it's so close to Shanghai.

3.How is life in Ningbo? lots of fun things there?

    any advices/comments are appreciated

    Hey there,

I can't really tell you too much about the home campus, because I've never attended uni in the UK, but I'm thinking about applying to Ningbo for my Masters, and am interested in those questions aswell. I have already researched a bit and can shed some light on 2 and 3.

2.) Living cost is no way near as high as in the UK. Apparently there is an international student dorm that is pretty cheap. Living costs in Ningbo are cheaper than in Shanghai, and as a foreigner you should be fine with whatever you spend in the UK (you will probably spend less, and actually be able to consume more)..

3.) Ningbo seems quite small compared to Shanghai, yet its quite international, and there seems to be a lot to do, especially outdoors! Theres some foreign bars, some clubs, and restaurants. You are close to the sea aswell! What kind of fun things are you looking for?

What are you planning to study and when will you start?

    Thank you for answering, Kl1887
Im planning to work on Education and/or Humanities. I've roughly talked to a professor there, and he seems to be interested in my proposed research plan. If things go as planed, i want to start next year. What about you?

    hi,
I'm doing in Ningbo my bachelor in Architecture (I'm from Poland).

Ningbo is a huge city (7 milion people) but not very interesting. I would rather say that it is a very boring city. Shanghai is great so I often go there for a weekend. In Ningbo there are only few bars and restauranta that are similiar to what we know from Europe. In general, when in comes to activities and having fun it is not the best.

ningbo is cheap in comparision to Europe. I spend around 2000RMB for living and 1200 RMB for accomodation per month = 350 Pounds (much cheaper than in UK). Shangha is more expensive. Ningbo is cheap but as for Chinese standars, Ningbo is expensive.

Teaching - I have never sudied in Nottingham UK but I think that it is almost the same. Campus in UK has more faiclities, buildings, better staff but in general China gives more opportunities. Your are much closer to lecturers than in UK. I am very happy with standars in China.

In general, Ningbo is nice place to study. China is a nice place to study heh. I would never like to live there longer than 3-4 years but I'm happy that I study there.
