    Intermittent Fasting (IF) Thread
So I've read up on intermittent fasting and there appears to be a lot of research backing it up.

I've started it myself today using the 8 hour feeding window with 16 hours of fasting.

Has anybody had any experience of IF? Do you guys think it is a beneficial method of eating?

lol, skipping breakfast and calling it I.F.

Good luck with your nutrient timing goals for 2012.

Skipping breakfast is probably the worst idea. If anything you should skip dinner?

However, that brings me to ask - is having dinner perhaps most important so your body collects nutrients and stuff to grow overnight? (just speculation).

breakfast is pointless tbh, I never eat it. On most days I only eat after 6pm, it's fine. Eating during the day just makes people fat and tired for the most part, especially sedentary people (almost everyone).

Surely you're doing it backwards. It'd be more beneficial to eat in the day and stop in the evening, then you're actually burning what u eat and have more energy? What's the point in having a full stomach at night? Genuinely curious.

    wut?

    and have more energy?
Eating doesn't give people energy in the short term like that.

    What's the point? I don't understand.

If you eat breakfast I'm pretty darn sure you'd have more energy at midday than if you didn't eat breakfast. Why do you want a stomach full of carbs (among other things) in the evening, at which point you're going to be less active?

Eating breakfast just makes me really hungry by mid-morning, and starving by mid-day. If I don't eat anything I feel fine and keep going all day while everyone else has lunch and falls asleep at their desk.

Well that sounds like the ideal time to eat, doesn't it? Then you can rest and relax, often post-workout.

You overestimate how fast you digest food. Also plenty of people, including me have tried skipping breakfast and found themselves being less hungry through the day. Whether that's healthy or not due to being catabolic in the morning though...

Crappy food high in simple sugars and overeating will make anyone drowsy/lethargic. What you eat makes all the difference. But if it works for you...

If you're hungry by midday surely your breakfast is well on it's way being digested. Foods with mixed simple and complex carbs, such as fruit and/or porridge, will give you constant energy. If I eat roughly 2 hours before a run or hard workout, I absolutely have more energy. Also I find you're less 'explosive' on an empty stomach.

Theoretically, yeah. I have no idea why it's like this but it just is. I guess how you feel with no breakfast depends on you but you will be less hungry at lunch.

Thanks for sharing, I found that video most informative!

I do tend towards obsessive/addictive behaviours so maybe IF isn't for me

I really don't know what to do, all the time I find out about new research on food and eating that basically discredits all the other 'diets' or methods of eating.

Not even nutritionists or fitness experts seem to agree with each other.

I don't have a clue what to do.

I understand the basic principles of:
    - Plenty of protein
    - Wholemeal/Wholegrain Carbs
    - Healthy Fats
    - Plenty of Fruit and Veg
    - Avoid Trans fat
    - Tend towards natural foods

Doing a slow bulk in IF at the minute (0.5lb/week) because I have so much time free this summer, thought it was worth a try. Eating from 9-5 at 2950 calories.

Hard to get the calories in but I don't feel hungry at all from 5-12 when I go to sleep.

I've been doing IF for a few weeks now. I haven't been able to train much due to an injury, can't do any shoulder or chest movements as well as no pull-ups either. I have a 5-6 hour feeding window and about 18 or 19 hours fasted

I feel very energetic to say the least. I was out of the gym for a month and have lost some mass and gotten a bit fatter, but I believe I would have been in a worse situation if not for IF. Now that I'm back in the gym I've found my lifts haven't suffered a great deal and strength is coming back quickly.

    I've experienced the same things.

However, I start feeling really tired around 8pm. That's a good thing though I guess - fixed my sleeping patterns. Also, I find that I don't need as much sleep now, and that I wake up earlier than usual but feel full of energy.

    Have you experienced that?

I don't get tired in the evenings since my sleep pattern is always messed up during the summer.

As for sleep hours requirements I doubt IF has changed that for me.

What I have noticed is that I rarely get as hungry these days. Who would have thought fasting 16-19 hours a day would have such an effect. I also don't have as much of an appetite though, what I tend to do these days is cook a big bowl of pasta and meat in the mid afternoon the break my fast, eat as much as I can, then come back to it after a few hours for round 2
