Tips on how to tone up abs.
    Hey everyone,

I'm looking for tips on how to gain tone and definition in my abs/v-line area. I'm an 18 year old guy, with a slim build. I weigh just over 10st. To be honest, my diet is terrible, I eat a lot of junk food. However, my metabolism is high so I don't really gain weight because of it. Currently, my stomach area isn't flat, it's slightly rounded, with no defined muscles.

When I start university I will buy some dumbells to build up my arms, but for the moment I want to tone my abs. So:

-Should I improve my diet? Or is maintaining my weight currently enough?
-If I work to tone my abs, but eat junk food, will they cancel each other out even if my diet doesn't really affect my build?
-What excercises/workouts do you recommend for defining abs?

    Thanks!

Reduce body fat %. Abs are made in the kitchen, you could have massive abs but you're not gonna see em till you get down to about 15%.

Exercises specifically for abs are crunchs and anything else that stresses your core like leg raises etc. They're also stressed in the big compound exercises like deads and squats but I guess you won't be doing them.

I agree with rollerball, but would add that it will be closer to 10% body fat before you see anything.

Improving your diet is a must, not only to see your abs but because we all had good metabolism at 18, its when you hit your mid 20's you will baloon. Easier to change your diet now than then.

I never said how much I eat.

Ye try to improve your diet, and maybe add some cardio like jogging or cycling to burn calories. You should aim for a calorie deficit which means you should be consuming less than 2500 calories a day. There are calculators online that calculate roughly how much protein, fat, carbs you should consume.

And yes body fat would have to be around 10% ish for you abs to become visible.

Callipers are probably the cheapest way and they are quite accurate

may as well go on a random number generator. would be equally as accurate.

    and @ OP.
doing abs and biceps isnt trying to improve yourself, particularly at 10 stone. its you 'trying' to look how you think females will find you attractive.

Can we ban the word "toned" from the fitness section?

I simply want to slim myself a little. Sorry this is more like weight loss than hardcore weightlifting.
Well then, what do you suggest? That I/any average person just go and leave it to the professionals?
You're just a bit negative, that's all. I've got the answers I need, thank you, so my questions couldn't have been that stupid.

doing it right =/= being a professional.

i am negative to people who have the wrong attitude. you dont join a football club but say to the coach you only want to take penalties and then sit of the bench for the rest of the game.

you will have no benefit from doing what you want to do, wont get bigger ant will look like ****. abs on a skinny guy are like big tits on a fat bird, they dont count. also girls over the age of 12 arent really into auswitz abs either.

Changing your diet should be the first thing you should do!! Believe me, do you think the massive guys and all the athletes in the olympics get into shape by eating junk food? You should maybe also consider taking supplements or protein shakes etc I know a lot of people probably think they dont work etc. But if you get sore from doing the exercises they will help you to rebuild the tissue faster and thus build muscle faster No pain no gain is always my saying. Do the exercises till your body starts to hurt, then stop... The idea is to actually 'rip' the muscles, but dont over do it!

    Very well said... + repped
This is the reason why I see 95% of the people at my uni. gym moaning over not getting slim / strong or whatever their goal is , only because they haven't got the right mental attitude. They want to have Zeus like physique , fine who doesn't but doing few sets of cheated curls won't get you anywhere.

It is either cardio or weight lifting , there is no other way of going about it.
