The last First Capital Connect train from Cambridge via Letchworth Garden City to London is 11.15pm
And back to the motion:
I don't care... it is big government, an aye for this is a yes for big government! we need a smaller more patriotic government!(Original post by Morgsie)
The Railways Act 2005 abolished the Strategic Rail authority and transferred the power of awarding Franchises to the DfT and the devolved Administrations. -

Don't you just love First Capital Connect?(Original post by Nynyflower)
The last train from Cambridge to London is 10:45pm on my line, completely impractical. -

Re: M114 - Night Train Motion
Have you ever been on one of the last trains at night though? I have many times and they are dead; not even half full. No wonder they stop running after certain times.
Don't forget if you have trains running during the night you also need station staff and more signalling staff. It would just be a waste of money imo. -
Re: M114 - Night Train Motion
Nay. It's down to the private companies to decide whether it is money down the drain or not. Especially in this climate of austerity.
I've thought I've been stranded late at night before, but I just had to go on a detour to an extra station and then I got back. You should know the time of the last train and plan accordingly.

Re: M114 - Night Train Motion
This is surely far more complex than just later trains would be nice. You need the infrastructure to make this practical. Which means stations and their amenities need to be open far later, security and transport police need to be available. Engineers and coaches for rescuing stranded passengers need to be available thought out the night. All the things needed normally would be needed at night, so increased cost, then more due to night rates of pay, all to cater for a few stragglers.
That is before you get into the problems with engineering work carried out at night, you can't just shut or dig up a section of track if trains are coming through every couple of hours. -
Re: M114 - Night Train MotionAh. I get the liverpool to manchester train and it's always been quiet at night. The second from last train is usually quieter than the absolute last train though. During the day & busy times you can't find a seat on these trains though.(Original post by Nynyflower)

I don't know why they stop trains if they are busy at night. Maybe after that "last train" the passenger numbers just decrease rapidly so they make you all squeeze onto that last train to keep profits up? Idk though but that would make sense to me. -
Re: M114 - Night Train Motion
The reason the tube doesn't run all night, where as the NY Subway does, is because each of our tube lines only has one set of rails, and if a train's going over them even once an hour, it means that the only maintenance that can be done on the rails is that which takes less than 45 minutes to both conduct and put back to working order. That's why they *can* do it on New Years Morning, but that's about it. I assume the same would be true for the majority of the UK's rail network. If the tracks are designed to have night trains on, then various design decisions are made that facilitate this maintainence. You can't just do it on all the lines.
Oh and also GET THE LAST DAMN TRAIN YOU IDIOTS. Private companies shouldn't be forced to run unprofitable services just to ferry you about. Get a hotel, get a cab, get a car or get home earlier. The government doesn't owe you a social life. -

Re: M114 - Night Train MotionThis.(Original post by Anony mouse)
Well how limited do you propose that it should be? Many train services finish around 1am and start again at about 4am. No point incurring huge expenses running extra trains in between just because every now and then someone is too rat faced to tell the time after a night out. Just let the operators decide. -
Re: M114 - Night Train MotionMaybe some of us don't have the money to pay for a hotel, get a cab, or get a car? It's highly frustrating having to dash to the train station when you have been to a show or gig, or you have been socialising with your friends, because the last train is at 11.00pm(Original post by CyclopsRock)
