    ‘Troops opened fire on Rohingya’
Government forces are continuing to persecute Muslims in Burma's Rakhine state after failing to protect them during deadly clashes in June, Human Rights Watch has said in a report.

Security forces had killed and raped members of the Rohingya group and arrested hundreds of others, it said.

The 56-page report is the second in a fortnight to draw attention to abuses in Rakhine state.

The UN has sent an envoy to investigate the violence that killed at least 78.

In the weeks since the worst of the violence the Burmese authorities have stopped journalists and aid workers from getting to most sensitive parts of the state, says the BBC's Jonah Fisher in Bangkok, so getting accurate information is extremely difficult.

Burma denies its security forces are guilty of human rights abuses in Rakhine. A presidential adviser responded to the Human Rights Watch allegations by saying the government had responded to the violence there as quickly as it could.

The findings in the HRW report are similar to an earlier report by Amnesty International - dismissed by a government spokesman in the state as "groundless and biased".

“But the international community appears to be blinded by a romantic narrative of sweeping change in Burma, signing new trade deals and lifting sanctions even while the abuses continue,” said HRW Asia deputy director Phil Robertson.[1]

The last paragraph is what I want to discuss here. Why is there very little outrage in the international community? According to the UN, the Rohingya people are one of the most persecuted minorities in the world. In spite of this, earlier in the year the EU actually suspended sanctions on Burma. Should that be reconsidered in light of reports from HRW and other human rights groups?

I don't really expect the West to do anything, but Muslim countries on the other hand... :facepalm2:

I am Burmese and as far as I know, the Burmese government is not going to be thrilled with international support and they will still try to deny them. You should also know that all Burmese medias are writing from one side ( i.e Buddhists ). Actually, Rohingyas had to suffer more. They are now denied by Burmese community and Bangladesh also doesn't accept them. I hate Bangladesh the most in this case, as they are being Muslim country and just not caring about those lives. I didn't say they are the one to suffer only. Both sides attack each other. And all the troops being Buddihsts, they only think that Muslims are bloody terrorists. Ohh yes, this thing has also started out in our country. So yes, us Burmese Muslims are now to suffer the consequences. Most people in the country now hate Muslims because of those damn medias. So, government is also taking the side of majority of people. All they know is that they need support to win upcoming elections to beat Aung San Suu Kyi's party. Most of the Burmese government are the ex-military men, so they need to get people's support to win next time as they cannot cheat.
