I can't gain weight!
I am 19 years old, 5ft4 and weigh 7stone and 7pounds. People have been constantly telling me how 'I look skinny' or that 'I'm loosing weight' it's really starting to get to me. I suffer with depression and anxiety which means that it just makes me worry about if there is something seriously wrong with me. I'm constantly eating! I work in a fast food resteraunt so I'm always around food which I am always eating. I just need some help in how to gain weight!! Someone help!!

Re: I can't gain weight!
Worrying will just make you lose weight so relax! You could try a diet designed for people trying to put on weight, if you aim to eat 2500 calories a day (or perhaps 3000 but you wouldn't want to get into the habit of eating quite so much) then you should gain weight in the long run.
You've obviously just got a very high metabolism which is always going to make it difficult. You could try what guys do and take protein supplements for a little while and see if that works. -
Firstly you could try using protein shakes, one in the morning and one in the afternoon-just make sure you read the instructions.(remember to buy the weight gaining ones)
Secondly try and eat food in small portions after 2 hours a day. Small portions means your body is storing food constantly, rather than it being broken down after large meals.
Try these tips hopefully it will have an effect after 2-3 months.
P.S To buy protein shakes try Holland And Barretts

Re: I can't gain weight!
I am in a very similar boat. Feel free to PM me. I have to admit I feel like I'm at a bit of a loss with it at the moment. I eat LOADS, easily 3000-4000 calories a day most days and I still don't gain weight and even lose weight sometimes. Stress does affect it, I know and right now I'm very stressed so I need to work on that. I have had millions of checks, thyroid, diabetes, liver and kidney functions, arthritic tests, sugar levels, infections you name it and I've probably been tested for it. All have come back clear or not bad enough to medicate or do anything about. The only thing that didn't was the sugar levels test and I can suffer from hypoglycaemia if I don't eat right. Although we do have a family history of being very thin for no reason, my dad, cousin and granddad (both sides of the family) also 'suffered' with this and did all of their lives so it might just be that I am the next one.
Are their any protein shakes or weight gain mixes which don't require you to add milk? I can't drink too much milk because I'm slightly intolerant and too much gives me migraines!
I also find it really insulting when people say 'are you losing weight again' or 'you're too skinny, eat more' etc etc. For now I just say 'it's not intentional' and walk off, but I don't understand why it's acceptable to say this to a very thin person but it's not acceptable to go up to a fat person and say 'cor you're fat' or 'haven't you lost any weight yet, you really should'... WHY, WHY???!!! For now I'm not dangerously underweight so it could be argued that the fat person is at more risk than me!!! Grrrrr, anyway I feel your pain and I wish I could give you the answer. Good luck

Re: I can't gain weight!
Hi Jayjay, don't worry too much about what people say. From your measurements you do sound thin but not too thin. You must have a very high metabolism. To be honest I don't think there is much you can do about it. My twin brother has a very high metabolism whereas I has a very low one and trust me a high one is better. We recently went on a month long holiday together, we did exactly the same things and ate exactly the same things, when we returned we weighed ourselves and he had gained 2 pounds where as I have put on 12 pounds. Being slim is much better than being fat

Re: I can't gain weight!
I have the same problem. I have a very fast metabolism which is further increased by medication I have to take. To make it easier to gain weight eat things like shortbread. They have about 150 calories a thin slice, so have one after dinner and one after tea. Bam, 300 calories already! When making food, look at the roast potatoes (just an example) on your tray, why not add two more? When making pasta, why not add a lil bit more? It's about taking it slowly, if you try to increase your intact too quick you might get stomach ache (tried and tested).
I've done this process twice now, and the thing you should remember is to enjoy it - eating food can be pretty fun! -
Re: I can't gain weight!Well you probably have a really high metabolism and so varying your diet won't help much. Building your muscle might serve you well - look for bulking exercises online or even on here.(Original post by JayJay.)

Re: I can't gain weight!
As long as you are eating enough healthy calories, you should be fine.
If you're trying to gain weight, you shouldn't really eat junk food a lot, it will just put flab an you. Instead, eat plenty of carbs like potatoes and plenty of protein, and do exercise to help gain muscle mass.
Disclaimer: I'm no expert, but this is what I would do.
Also, I'm taller and lighter than you, and there's nothing seriously wrong with me, so don't worry too much! A lot of younger people are similar.
