Re: Womens Team Sprint Disqualifications
In sprint cycling, you're only allowed to overtake in a certain zone (similar to baton changing in relay races).
The British rider overtook quite a bit before the line so their disqualification is fair enough, but the Chinese seemed to be equal when they crossed the line. Harsh decision for them if you ask me. -
Re: Womens Team Sprint DisqualificationsAs far as I understand it;(Original post by Astronomical)
What is they've done wrong, exactly? I missed the GB disqualification but watched the final and don't see what the Chinese did wrong? Could somebody please explain, the commentator just confused me even more!
The second rider's front wheel cannot pass the back wheel of the first rider before a certain point - they crossed before that point in both cases.
However watching some of the olympic competitions I feel like this;

Re: Womens Team Sprint DisqualificationsIt cannot cross their back wheel before a certain point, and it also cannot pass their front wheel at another point I think.(Original post by crocker710)

Re: Womens Team Sprint Disqualifications
The thing I don't get is that the GB team were relegated before their final and so lost all hope of a medal. They didn't just get shifted one place down. China do exactly the same thing but in the final and still get silver. How does that work? Surely they should have been out of it altogether.
ETA: They just explained it on the tv. Apparently, you go to the bottom of whatever round you're in. So the fact that China had already earnt a place in the final means that the only get relegated to the bottom of the top two.Last edited by coolh5000; 02-08-2012 at 18:51. -
Re: Womens Team Sprint Disqualificationsbecause they were in the final when that happened, whatever they do they're guarenteed a silver(Original post by coolh5000)

Oh, ok, that makes sense I suppose. They just showed another replay of the GB disqualification on BBC1 and that seems to agree with what you are saying. Such a shame considering we could, probably would, have got another gold medal.(Original post by crocker710)

What movie is that from by the way its bugging me haha -
Re: Womens Team Sprint DisqualificationsI still don't get it. China were in the round of 2 (the final), fouled, so ended up second. Britain were in the round of 4 (the semi-finals), fouled, yet ended up 8th? Not that it matters in the grand scheme of things, 4th and 8th go down as the same in terms of medallists, but it'd be nice to know why they did what they did(Original post by coolh5000)

Edit: nvm, they went out in the round of 8, it was the BBC article saying they raced Ukraine in the semi-finals that threw me.Last edited by Hopple; 02-08-2012 at 23:05. -
Re: Womens Team Sprint DisqualificationsChina were 1/20 and Germany were 8/1. Imagine the money that people lost on China.(Original post by Mockery)
I personally think someone had their money on Germany. How anyone could have come to the conclusion that China broke the rules is beyond me. -
Re: Womens Team Sprint Disqualifications
I'm glad this thread is full of people who understand what actually happened.
I was reading twitter earlier and some people just amaze me. The commissaires I admit were being ridiculously harsh with China but in a way I'm glad they're being consistent, unlike at the world championships.
I also read some absolutely disgusting tweet from a girl from Newcastle (I felt like hunting her down) saying she was "disgusted that the German flag was raised at the Olympics #dirtygermans" I could not believe my eyes when I read it.
My main issue with the China relegation is not the decision itself, but the way in which it was handled. If there was any query at all they should have announced the result as under question and not let the Chinese or German teams go speak to the interviewers. They should never have let it get that far, especially not without informing them first.
I have taken a disliking to one of the commissaires since the world championships. His face annoys me.

Re: Womens Team Sprint Disqualifications
The referee made a mistake in the womens fencing semi-final too, but I don't you advertising petitions to have that overturned, either... In any case, there is no appealing process in the Olympics.
You'd be staggered how common that view is in the North east. Living here feels like living on another planet, and not in a good way.(Original post by siani-chan)

Re: Womens Team Sprint DisqualificationsOh gosh. I really don't understand how some people can be so intolerant - I especially don't understand why some people are so against Germans in particular. I admit that I find many other cultures and languages fascinating so obviously I am very tolerant, but I really can't get my head around why some people aren't.(Original post by Astronomical)
