Re: ACA helpHi, thankyou for your suggestion. ACCA is out of the question, everyone i have spoken to have said that ACCA is hardly recognised and to only do ACA(Original post by Mos Def)
Sometimes decent sized firms offer ACCA routes for people with lower ucas points, that may be an option?
cima is another option but with the ACA atleats my options are broader,
i'm still looking around!. Smaller firms only ask for a cv im just really confused, with this whole set up. If i knew ucas points would matter i'd have re-taken some of my a-level modules! :/
but all the teachers i spoke to said i wouldnt need to and my degree should be enough! -
Re: ACA helpA-level resits generally aren't accepted so it wouldn't have made a difference. Wait until September and then use the ICAEW search criteria, you'll find something then. Now, not likely. It's not the right time to be applying. Good luck. You will find something. I have seen contracts that accept 260 or above(Original post by 189110)

Re: ACA helpOh gosh, dont know why people are so harsh. I just generally went through a bad time during my A-levels and i thought on mentioning that in my applications or cover letters.(Original post by gonnabesomething)

Okay i will have a look near september
Thankyou
And im really hoping a firm in the north west take me on. It sounds really competative, i'll have to make my cv and application stand out

Re: ACA helpNot all vacancies are listed on ICAEW site. If you google 'liverpool accountants' or 'manchester accountants', you will find smaller firms willing to take you.(Original post by 189110)

And do mention your circumstances, it's important firms know
But yes, September is when applications for 2013 open. You might still find some open now, but you gotta search for them

Re: ACA helpACCA is not that bad, and lots of the smaller firms offer it. And by smaller I just means outside the top 20.(Original post by 189110)

Re: ACA helpACCA isn't a bad qualification at all. The ACA is a better choice if you have the option, but I wouldn't turn your nose up at an ACCA contract from a decent company. Many who learn in industry do so through the ACCA.(Original post by 189110)

The reason the A-level requirements are quite strict (in my opinion) is to ensure you went to a well rated university. Generally speaking the vast majority of big 4 employees will be from top 20 universities, so by adding UCAS requirements they can filter out those who went to low ranked institutions.(Original post by 189110)

Harsh, but kind of makes sense? -
Re: ACA helpWhy apply to lots when you can apply to two or three and nail it?(Original post by 189110)
Makes me happy but sad to know i may only be applying to 2 or three firms while others will be applying to lots.

Re: ACA helpThat is true
, but im also worried about something else.
It seems like im winging.
My 260 points is a BBD in A-levels
i have an A in as level graphics and im unsure if they would count that too?
with my as grade i have 320 points
And the D was in a-level maths.
like i said before i just went through a bad time. But im predicted a 1st now for my degree.
Employers will look at my A-level and think no chance she'll get the 2:1 or the 1st

Re: ACA helpI know, i know all my friends and famiyl are saying this.(Original post by Regent)
What's done is done. Stop crying about something you can't change. Move forward.
But i'll stop crying over it but i won't reach where i want to be. And i really really want to go for ACA.
and like you said above only applying to three or four jobs isnt enough.
And i have just about found 3 firms who said they look at a-level grades and not points! -
Re: ACA helpEmployers are only interested in your top 3 A-levels. They won't include AS or anything else like that unfortunately.(Original post by 189110)

Well I agree it's not a smart move to only apply for three, but was just being encouraging to the OP(Original post by Regent)
You live in a fantasy land if you think only applying to three jobs and 'nailing' them is a realistic goal for even the best graduates.
For what it's worth I had a better then 50% application to job ratio (not including apps I withdrew when I accept an offer). My CV is nothing special really. I think when you're applying to companies which have lots of positions it's easier in a way, as if you meet the criteria you'll get the job. Harder when there is one or two jobs and you're directly competing with other applicants in my opinion. -

(sigh)!!. i'm confused.
i REALLY want this! it's my dream to become a chartered accountant,
but is it even worth me putting in the effort of making a good cv/ cover letters and taking hours on end on these application forms, for then the firms to look at my ucas/a-level marks and be like NO! last time i felt like this was when i went through clearning to get into the maths degree. All turned out well then. I guess nothing is impossible i thought with my D in maths no uni would take me on for a maths degree! -
Re: ACA helpI won't lie, I'm surprised you got in to a maths degree with a D in Maths(Original post by 189110)

Obviously worked out though so congrats!
In my experience A-levels are only used as an entry criteria. If you meet the requirements then they shouldn't work against you. A 'real person' is going to be interested in your degree, your experience and your aptitude. It's only the auto filters you need to get through with A-levels. So I guess the message is don't feel like your application will be binned because of your A-levels, so long as you meet the minimum requirements. If you don't meet the minimum requirements there is a good chance your app will be binned (although not guaranteed).
Keep at it

I applied to three grad schemes and I got one offer. I guess living in fantasy land paid off for me.(Original post by Regent)

On a realistic note. Applying for more jobs increases your chances of getting an offer. In my case I had limited time as I was writing writing my thesis. Putting more time into less applications and producing better quality applications was a better strategy for me.
OP, have you visited your careers service? They should be able to point you in the direction of firms which you are eligible to apply given your grades. They should also be able to proof read your applications.

Re: ACA helpWell, you're the exception which proves the rule. Or maybe you need to raise the quality of the graduate schemes you're applying to.(Original post by the-scientist)

I applied to KPMG, Deloitte and PWC, so pretty good quality graduate schemes.(Original post by Regent)
