What Sport Should I Try?
Hope this is the right place...

I've been asked by a friend to go along to an athletics club, but I've never really done athletics and I don't know which sport to try out.
I have a long torso, arms and short legs, so really I have a body shape more beneficial for a swimmer and not good for running - which isn't great as I can't swim
However, I do a lot of walking (im a fast walker which annoys a lot of people) and I'm pretty active.
What sport would you recommend me trying out?

Re: What Sport Should I Try?
I have been doing athletics for about 8ish years and your body shape doesnt tend to matter too much. The sport has such a large spectrum of events that you may find you are better at some more than others, then you can train for that specific event once you've had a go at them all

Re: What Sport Should I Try?you cant really say what you'd prefer atm. Try each sport such, both track and on the field, and then you will be able to go a certain way(Original post by iamthestig)
I've done some running before in PE but I hated PE so didn't really bother putting the effort in.
Walking to school, uphill, it takes me about 20 minutes to go 2 miles. Don't know whether thats good or bad... -
Re: What Sport Should I Try?I can assure you that you can't walk 10 minutes a mile.(Original post by iamthestig)

Re: What Sport Should I Try?My mistake, I meant 1.5. I did the wrong route on Google Maps(Original post by TheCurlyHairedDude)

Re: What Sport Should I Try?No 20 minutes for 1.5 miles(Original post by TheCurlyHairedDude)
So it took you 20 minutes to walk 3 miles then lol?
You must be superman -
Re: What Sport Should I Try?Just go down to your local track, there will be coaches there to advise you on what sort of training you want to do.(Original post by iamthestig)

If your any good they will most likely try and get you to compete in competitions so either be prepared to compete or come up with good excuses
also what age are you? -
Re: What Sport Should I Try?Maybe you should try swimming -- you never know when you might need it.(Original post by iamthestig)

Re: What Sport Should I Try?I was never any good at rugby in PE, whether that was me or the fact that I didn't get on with anyone in my class im unsure of.(Original post by y gorau)
Try Rugby. It's the off-season now so you could go to a local club (plenty in Wales) and train with them. -

Surely motorsport?!
If not could try rowing, that's something which needs the sort of bodyshape swimmers have too. Also, possible to pick it up quite late and get good. Helen Glover just won Olympic Gold after doing it for only a year!

I wouldn't mind rowing, but I have no-idea where to go and how to start. -

Just stick your postcode in. If you plan on going to uni virtually all of them have novice crews you can join. If you go to Oxbridge or Durham they also have intercollegiate competitions too. -
Re: What Sport Should I Try?It'd be worth a crack. At the very least you'd get a good pre-season workout!(Original post by iamthestig)
