Ah, the mainstream choice of poking, fair enough <img src="images/smilies/tongue.png" border="0" alt="" title="

<br />
That's fair enough! You should check out the Durham sub-forums too if you're wanting to chat to a couple of people before actually going to Uni - They'll probably have a topic where you can ask current students any questions you may have! <img src="images/smilies/smile.png" border="0" alt="" title="

Why Thankyou <img src="images/smilies/biggrin.png" border="0" alt="" title="

Wow, I had no idea; thanks for pointing that out
You're welcome

So, tell us a bit about yourself! I'm too fearful of continuing the education covnersation incase it's 'tedious' for you

Re: New here; in need of friends? No, no, it's your choice! And I didn't mean it like that; I just thought you might want to talk about something else. We can continue to education conversation; it's fine by me(Original post by Schmucks)

What subjects did you choose for A level?

I took Maths (obviously), Politics and Economics all the way through A Level, and Psychology at AS. We also had to take General Studies, most pointless hour every single week! I only chose to do Politics too because where I went they didn't have Law, so it was the nearest equivalent.

Re: New here; in need of friends?Haha I'm not particularly interesting, so get ready to answer quite a lot of questions on yourself!(Original post by Schmucks)

How was Politics? The majority of the people I know who took Economics hated it, haha.
And what do you actually learn in General Studies? Haha I remember when looking up uni offers, a lot said "gen. studies excluded"

Politics was actually really good. It was really interesting and we had great lecturers for it. One was this quite old guy who'd just retired, and was teaching just our class purely because he loved the subject. He was so passionate about it. The other was hilarious, he really engaged with the subject. I sort of wish i'd gone into something related to that or Law because of them, but I easily fell short of the grades so it never would've panned out!
General Studies was pretty much one hour a week where we'd have different tutors every time for no given reason. We'd do nothing. Watch a couple of videos, chat about 'ethics' etc. All I did in that hour was make friends with a lad who had an interest in the same band as me at the time (Enter Shikari - Oddly enough he's now best friends with them and tours worldwide with them as part of their filmcrew etc!). -

Re: New here; in need of friends?I'd love to have the old guy lecturer...he sounds incredibly cool for teaching a subject simply because he liked it a lot. Ah, what did you need to take it as a degree?(Original post by Schmucks)

Sounds really boring :/ and that is brilliant! How on Earth did he become best friends with them?

Re: New here; in need of friends? He and a mate of his spent about 5 weeks one summer watching every gig they did (think they got to like 25 gigs in that time?) and through afterparties etc, ended up meeting them a bit. It then turned out that they had a bit of work experience going for him as a 'Roadie', so he went along with that across Europe. They really took a shine to him, and he ended up working with them on their US tour. He's even got his own little record label set up that I believe they're helping promote! It's crazy to see it to be honest, I wish i'd got involved at the time!(Original post by Rosa Arabelle)

Yeah, he was great. There were some people who felt he was 'boring', but I think that's because he wanted to treat the subject seriously rather than crack a joke every two minutes. Shame really, as I don't think he got the respect he deserved for volunteering to teach us!
I needed AAA for Politics/Law at Leeds (at the time A* weren't possible) and AAB in Manchester. Maths was somewhat easier, though I actually applied to go to Leeds as my firm with an ABB requirement. I ended up with BCD (somewhat dodgy marking on my last Maths exam meant I got a D, those I've spoke to feel I should've had a B). Nottingham only wanted BCD, though, so I got in and thought it wasn't worth disputing if I was already in!
I feel like i've rambled on a lot there, sorry

Yeah, it always saddens me when teachers who are plain brilliant don't get the respect they evidently deserve.
Oh, right, OK. Hmm, that is dodgy.
It's okay, I prefer rambling. -
Re: New here; in need of friends?yess. lol im doing the full IB thing. so hopefully i can score high enough on my exams.(Original post by sanksta)
Yeah, I did. I see you're from the USA - are you thinking of applying to Durham as an international?
-
Re: New here; in need of friends?Yeah, seeing his facebook update to Dallas, Boston, LA, New York etc every day is depressing in comparison!(Original post by Rosa Arabelle)

Anyway, I guess i'll ask the questions then?
Had many plans for the summer?

Re: New here; in need of friends?I initially had a lot of plans; going to Italy for a week, for instance. But in the end I couldn't go, so I'm just staying home at the moment, saving up some money for a new bike and taking things easy. What about you?(Original post by Schmucks)

Re: New here; in need of friends?Ah that's a shame! I'm going travelling around Europe next year and really want to go to Italy, like my main priority! Still, taking it easy sounds good(Original post by Rosa Arabelle)

Not much really, I have some work on my dissertation etc to do this summer, but aside from that not much at all! Though obviously we've now entered my brithday weekend plans, so that's something. -
Re: New here; in need of friends? It was a shame, yes. Wow, I envy you(Original post by Schmucks)

Re: New here; in need of friends?Sounds fun!(Original post by Rosa Arabelle)
Um, well, I'm hoping to miraculously feel much better by the morning so that I can cycle. And I'm going to go shopping for my mum's birthday, but that's it.
