    Mantids and Snakes
Has anyone a pet mantid or a snake? I'm seriously considering getting a mantid when I start uni, in particular a nice green Giant Asian Mantis (Hierodula membranacea).

I'd consider getting a snake, too, such as a Royal Python (Python regius). They look like really interesting animals and I love watching them!

What do people generally think of more obscure pets such as these? Have you ever had a snake or insect pet - would you recommend them? I've got a dog, but it's more my mothers than it is mine, and once I move out I won't get to see him very much at all.

Aww no, how come? Was he old or did get get ill or something? Would you say they're easy to look after? How about costs of looking after one? I know a mantis would be very inexpensive to look after, but I imagine snakes are more high maintenance.

I'm assuming bro-tier is a good thing, by the way?

He was old. He belonged to my cousin before he belonged to me. I think he was about 12-years-old. They're very low-maintenance animals and quite inexpensive. I don't know much about mantids, I imagine that they eat more regularly than snakes though but snakes have the possibility of vet's bills and medical issues, whereas I think if a Mantis gets ill you'd just buy another one.

    Yeah. They're cool; interesting, mild-natured, and low-maintenance.

Oh, right, well that's the best way to go I suppose.

How big was he? I've read they can reach 5 feet! Mantises eat pretty much constantly, but that's a bonus, because watching them catch their food is so entertaining! What did you keep him in, a glass aquarium type thing? Vet bills are a pain, but that's the risk of having a more substantial pet, I suppose. :dontknow:
