What are these "near death" signs?
Turning itself off for no reason. Failing to boot up. Whilst booting up, screen goes black for a good few minutes before going to the user menu. Keep getting errors when installing new programs. Drivers won't even update regardless of what I do. The build of the laptop is really bad too which means that I've had to replace the DC cable 5 times because it keeps coming loose - soldered the cable a few times in-beween new replacements. Screen failed on me a few months back, so replaced that. Also, the fragile wireless switch has broken whilst fixing the internal structure. The list goes on really

4 years old now. Took it apart and gave it a clean a few weeks ago. Crazy how much dust accumulates inside. Have it running on max 80% cpu to stop it overheating. It does sit on top of a homemade cooling fan though.

4.5 years old now. Considering it's an Acer that's good going. Although it has needed reformatting twice, still get BSOD (looked up the code and there's something physically wrong with the hard drive), battery lasts about 3 minutes, power connection is dodgy so you have to fiddle the plug around to get it to power the laptop, it overheats on any surface other than carpet within 5 minutes...

Oh and sometimes when booting up, it can't 'find the hard drive/OS' so you have to constantly retry or leave it and try again later. I found punching the laptop works sometimes

Saying that though, most of the time since the last reformat it has been running at speed like new. Occasionally it slows up. I definitely need a new laptop though, it struggles to multi task because the programmes of today demand more power, and I can't put up with the general unreliability.

I've had my MacBook Pro since November last year, so it's not even a year old yet.

Two months, probably last me until this time next year/two... only because I'm a macfag and spend all my money on shiny things that I don't need then complain I'm poor all the time. If they ever release a Retina Air I'm going to have to whore myself out or something. I need help.

...and are you planning on upgrading/replacing it any time soon? What's the spec?

Mine is 3 years old and I'm going to wait for Haswell next year
I have two, a laptop purchased in 2000 (11 years old) and a netbook purchased in 2009 (3 years old), but they are not by any means my only computers...

Both running XP, I have to keep the first one plugged in all the time I'm using it though, it died a long time ago. Get about 6 hours life out of the other one.

4 years old this summer. I've had to replace the battery and the power lead. It got pretty buggered physically after I had it in my bag and the shoulder strap broke Now I it won't close. Not sure when I'll get a new one.

My main lover is 5 years old and counting, some close calls here and there but it's still living strong. That said, Id love to clean it up and get it into factory condition given its graphics card is still better than my replacement laptop.

The replacement my dad made me get is a couple weeks old and I'm already seeing one or two signs that it will not surpass the age of my main

Re: How old is your laptop?
i bought mine last july so its just a year old now.
my first laptop died completely after about 6 years of use so i had to buy a new one. i have a pink Dell Inspiron 15R and i love it. It cost me £350, but £325 of that was the security deposit i got back off my truly incompetant letting agency when i finally had enough of them and my housemates, which i really wasnt expecting to get back at all, so only had to contribute £25 of my own money to the laptop

Mine's a basic Dell 1.6GHz laptop from about 2007, so 5 years-ish. I've only had to re-format and install Windows (XP) once and it's still going strong. Had to replace the charger and keyboard. It started overheating so I took it apart and re-applied thermal paste, runs fine now. The lid hinge is wobbly and I can't seem to tighten it, but that's minor.

Still on original battery and a charge lasts about 3 hours which is as good as it ever was almost.
