Should i move in? Anybody know this area/street in Derby?
Hi, i will be starting at the university of derby (hopefully) come September. So, my boyfriend has a friend that lives in Derby already (he is not a student but is only 22) and works full time, and is still struggling to make ends meet. He lives in a 2 bedroom house (on his own) and so the spare bedroom is going free. He wanted to know if we want to move in, which will obviously help him out, and will mean we can stop house hunting!
The only problem is the house isn't massive (but still big enough for 3 people) and isn't the best looking (on the inside). He isn't dirty of anything, and is a clean person, but things just look a bit old and worn down :/ However the rent is very cheap- he is only asking for £95 a week from both of us together so (so like £47.50 each).
The house is in the ashbourne road area, on Slack Lane. So i was just wondering if this is a good street to live on? Is there a lot of crime? Are local amenities (e.g. sainsburys local) close by? Do they have any bus routes through the street? (I would ask the guy who lives there, but i'm not sure i would get an honest answer since he really wants us to move in!)
Most importantly, do you think we should do it, or should we stick to finding our own place? If so what areas should we look at?
Thanks

Re: Should i move in? Anybody know this area/street in Derby?
I moved to Derby when I came here to uni in 2005. I used to live near Slack Lane.
Slack Lane is just off Ashbourne Road, which is a proper student part of town, ie. lots of student houses. Most students tend to live in one of three areas: Ashbourne Road, Uttoxter New Road, or Ked Road.
Slack Lane is probably about 30 mins from Ked Road campus on foot, and about 20 mins from town. There's a chippie nearby, and two Sainsbury's Locals within about 10 minutes walk too.
There are bus routes nearby too (Uttoxeter Old Road and Ashbourne Road)
Hope that helps.Last edited by All Bar None; 11-08-2012 at 14:25. Reason: typo -

edit: Ignore allllll of this, thinking of a different Slack Lane. What kind of retarded council names two streets the same within 5km of each other
Crime should be pretty low around there, you're practically in Allestree. The crime is generally around Normanton area, and the big terraced zone between Broadway and Kedleston (though still perfectly low)
I believe there's a corner shop on Abbey Lane, other side of Duffield Road, and it's probably 15 minutes to Park Farm, which has your supermarket, iceland and so on.
I don't think buses go down Slack lane and Ferrers Way because there's a seperate bus service that runs along Kedleston up into Allestree, and a different service that goes from Duffield into town, and you're kinda in the middle
- if you wanted a bus to the uni campus you'd have to walk to the Allestree route, which is the same distance as if you simply walked to campus, but there's a bus route into town along Duffield Road
From what I'm seeing of Slack Lane, and having been there myself loads, it looks a bit... upmarket for uni students? I'm sure there are areas that're far cheaper, though probably more unpleasant, but as places go, it's pretty nice!
(lived in derby for 20 years, and on west park road, which is right next to Broadway)Last edited by Architecture-er; 12-08-2012 at 08:35. -
Re: Should i move in? Anybody know this area/street in Derby? Are we looking at different Slack Lanes? The one I'm looking at is next to St. Benedicks, which is miles from Ashbourne Road - but I can't see any houses on it(Original post by All Bar None)

Would you say its a safe area then? I heard living near student areas can be unsafe since loads of people will be drinking, and so it can become quite violent
Also, i heard there are more burglaries etc. since there are multiple laptops, tv's and games consoles etc.
Thanks for the help

Re: Should i move in? Anybody know this area/street in Derby?
My impression of Derby, having lived around here for seven years, is that it's a pretty safe place to be. Being out late on your own would probably be risky, but if you're out in town then you can cab it back to Slack Lane for about a fiver.
If you want to know about crime, you can get crime stats here by putting in the postcode, which is probably something like DE22 3GB: http://www.police.uk/ -

Re: Should i move in? Anybody know this area/street in Derby? It looks peaceful from the outside and im sure the women in there would love to have you as a guest(Original post by mizzmegg)
haha.... I think i would get eaten alive
Lets just say i am rather delicate and not confrontational.... :L

anyways, what are you gonna study and why did you choose derby uni?
Sorry I cant help you much as Im from Birmingham and have only been in Derby when the cross country train does a quick stop there before continuing to/from Nottingham. -

*shudders*

I will be studying the BEd (Primary education degree).
I chose derby for so many reasons.... Its been voted as the number one university to study primary ed by the National Student Survey getting nearly 100% in student satisfaction. It has 'outstanding' OFSTED reports and great facilities for the course e.g. mock classrooms etc. its very modern (this sounds so nerdy but the library is AWESOME!) and it is close to home, the general atmosphere is great and the lecturers are really nice and seem down to earth
Probably the main reason though, is that me and my bf wanted to go to uni together, and he liked derby too
Its ok
And are you planning to go to uni? If so where and to study What?

Re: Should i move in? Anybody know this area/street in Derby?Well he has recently told us he is upping the price to £50 a week each, not including bills or anything :/ But i suppose that is still pretty cheap!(Original post by tpxvs)
For that sort of pricing, I think id definitely go for it! Especially if your going with your boyfriend as well so its nowhere near as scary as if you were alone... Also, as its his friend he won't rip you off or cheat you in anyway.
Do you still think its reasonable?

Derby sounds like a cool university actually! I might consider it one of my choices. Though, I may have quite a long way to go.
I think Ive totally screwed up on my AS levels this year in English, Psychology and Law! I want to do pharmacy and I know at certain unis they have foundation courses in pharmacy. But I might as well as just do science a levels.... My main goal is to be a pilot hopefully once I graduate in pharmacy and earn a little cash
Does your BF want to be a teacher too? -

well that's a start, but if you do want to be a teacher, it might help to get some additional experience in schools
Yeah it is really great, i have manged to fall in love with the place, i will be immensely disappointed if i dont get in
I suppose if a uni feels 'right' it doesn't really matter how far away it is! You should definitely consider it, and if you do want to know anything about it or teaching, just ask
Well i am not really sure on whats best for that subject regarding a levels, you are probably best discussing it with a careers adviser? But good luck in whatever you decide
Ahh no, he wants to be a graphic designer!
He would probably kill the children in they annoy him :L
