Wonderful stream of medals
It is brilliant that we are now 4th in the medals table - perhaps we will even make it to third!
We should just consider though that this comes at a huge cost in a time of recession when the government are busy planning to cut basic services - today we hear for example that all of the Women's Refuges are going to have to close next year because of the introduction of Universal Credit.
At current figures of £16bn total cost for the games (a figure which will probably rise - they often get understated during the games and then cities announce the final cost was unexpectedly much higher), each medal is costing a little under £900m to win - another way to look at it is that each Gold comes in at a little over £2,500,000,000.
Not that it isn't great, but just to give a little perspective.
We could actually have partially fixed the deficit this year if we weren't hosting the Olympics. Instead, there will be further cuts.
EDIT Can I safely assume that the people negging me are in favour of spending cuts on basic services to fund the Olympics?Last edited by Fires; 03-08-2012 at 13:52. -
