How much did PS1 games cost?
Afternoon, I've been playing a bit of Spyro 2 over the past week or so, and it got me thinking-How much would a newly released PS1 game have set you back, back in the day? Since I was born in December 1994 I am just about in the PS1 generation, however my tender age when the PS1 was at the dizzying height of its popularity means I had little understanding of how much the games were to buy, so I'd appreciate it very much if an elder statesman could perhaps clear this up for me.

Re: How much did PS1 games cost?Yep. I remember seeing a boxed up edition of Pokemon or something when I went into a games shop and it was like £70 or something. I was like wtf.(Original post by Jono404)
Same price as games now iirc...platinum ones were always 19.99, new ones £30-40. N64 games on the other hand, especially when it launched were about £60-70, which if you account for inflation seems absolutely insane now.
I think games have nearly always been around the £40 mark upon being released regardless of the value of the pound. I remember seeing old Atari ST games in magazines like Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge II being advertised for being sold new for £40-50.Last edited by NDGAARONDI; 03-08-2012 at 13:49. -
Re: How much did PS1 games cost?Yeah, my interest probably peaked between the ages of 12-14 (CoD4 days), and even then I wasn't exactly dedicated to video games, I'm 17 now and I can go weeks verging on months without picking up a controller, it's just natural I suppose.(Original post by photographylover)
I remember paying about £20 for Crash Team Racing in Gamestation. I used to love video games. I don't think anything of them now. Not even games on my iPhone! -
Re: How much did PS1 games cost?Same, it was all I did as a kid. I tried to get back into them lately as I had a lot of free time so I bought a 360 and some games, it just gets used as a media player now. Growing up I guess.(Original post by photographylover)

Re: How much did PS1 games cost?If that was Revenge of Shinobi it was easily worth that. My brother paid over £100 for an import of Street Fighter 2 Turbo on the SNES in about 1992. The more I think about it the more I realise how cheap everything is now. CDs used to be at least a tenner in shops, DVDs were nearly 20 quid when they first came out and VHS tapes were quite dear as well.(Original post by GR3YFOXXX)
I also remember paying £40 for Shinobi on the Megadrive! -
Re: How much did PS1 games cost?Jesus, you're waaaay off. PS1 and PS2 games typically retailed for £30-35, with a few being £40. PS3 games typically have an RRP of £40-45, sometimes £50. £20 has always been the RRP for games re-released under the Platinum label.(Original post by gridlock)
I remember PS1 games being around £20, PS2 about £30 and PS3 are about £40. Looks like they'll be £100 each by the PS9.
