Re: General Athletics ThreadCan't offer an explanation other than the fact that Johnson was a freak of nature. He was so quick but made it look so damn effortless.(Original post by silent ninja)
So not really up to date with all of the athletics. How come Johnson's 400m record still hasn't been broken? He made it 1999. I actually remember it. How has it stood for so long?!
I guess it is a little strange. It tends to be the field events that have had records stand for a long time. Most of them are around 20 years old now.
I think the only male track event where the record has lasted longer than Johnson's is 1500m by El Guerrouj.
Pretty much all of the women's records have lasted a long time.
I prefer them lasting a long time. It makes them more special when they are clearly not easily attainable. It gets stupid in sports like swimming when the record gets broken constantly. It kind of devalues the record.
Edit: Just had a quick look and the 400m hurdles and 4x400m are both older than Johnson's as well.Last edited by TheMagicRat; 04-08-2012 at 20:05. -
Re: General Athletics ThreadBecause its a ridiculously fast time?(Original post by silent ninja)

Re: General Athletics ThreadThat's probably because the Women's 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m records were set by women who were drugged up to their eyeballs.(Original post by TheMagicRat)

Because its a ridiculously fast time?
Straight to the point. Much better than my long-winded answer
True.(Original post by CB91)

Re: General Athletics ThreadHe doesn't appear to be that popular in America, despite his achievements?(Original post by This Honest)
Talking about Johnson, why does he work with the British commentators a lot?
-
Re: General Athletics ThreadI hope that's not the case(Original post by silent ninja)
He doesn't appear to be that popular in America, despite his achievements?
-
Re: General Athletics ThreadProbably because he calls it like he sees it and doesn't mind pissing people off with his opinions. I'm glad we get him for that very reason.(Original post by silent ninja)

Ennis.

Probably because there isn't coverage like this in America. BBC cover pretty much all the major Athletics championships and I imagine they pay pretty well as well!(Original post by This Honest)

Re: General Athletics ThreadI think he was just caught napping there. This is a blistering pace though.(Original post by Roobsa)
Bekele having a mare. Let's hope his concentration has been shaken.
