Don't go with Barclays. They only give you £200 and you have to beg and plead for it to be extended.

I had to extend mine because my house for next year needed a £300 deposit and a grand of rent over the summer. So i applied for an extension to £1000 to make the money since my parents simply couldn't help me.

The total rent/bills for next year is a good 2 grand cheaper than my stu accom from first year, so i was going to be a hell of a lot better off. And i'm working over summer too so money for next year was no problem at all.

I got it after 3 failed applications and a lot of stress. The system kept rejecting me because it simply assumes your expenditure will be the same for next year as it was in first year, where i forked out an extra 2k and it wouldn't take my job into account. The system calculated i was ****ed, and since there's no point in extending an overdraft if it's not going to stop you defaulting anyway, got declined twice before finally being accepted after speaking with someone in the department. I was a day late on one of my payments, got charged £8 for it.

Everyone else gets £500 or similar initially and automatic upgrades of a few hundred at the end of each year. Not Barclays. Barclays want you to make you squirm before they give you anything.

I've set no overdraft with my current hsbc account, but have been overdrawn a bit, but always paid it back plus any charges, will this effect my overdraft I get for my Student account with them?

The best thing to do is actually look around per year of study...

    1st year..

    Co-op
    Santandear
    Lloyds
    Natwest
    RBS

    2nd year onward...

    Co-op
    Lloyds
    Santandear
    Natwest
    RBS

I tend to ignore the freebies as the guaranteed amounts are much more important, all these accounts are guaranteed.

I don't know why people are saying Natwest aren't doing the railcard this year. It currently says that people who have had an account prior 15th April 2012 and upgrade to a student account will be eligible for one in "important information" http://www.natwest.com/personal/stud...t-details.ashx

There seems to be so many people with student accounts already, yet I didn't think you could actually get one without a UCAS acceptance letter, and the earliest to get one of those is results day, 16th August, surely..

That is unless the people I keep seeing all have unconditional offers, or am I being stupid?!

I have my UCAS letter as for my course I already had the grades just needed to prove I could drive, have a blood test. So mine is unconditional

I just had my current account upgraded to a student account with Santander. Took about 5 mins (after waiting for an hour) and he gave me my £1000 overdraft straight away and didn't even ask for any proof I was accepted or anything

If you want a student/graduate view then you should check out Savethestudent.

I wrote the guide and have just updated it today which means it has all the information for this year that you would need.

I also picked out the best things from each account so that each student can choose from all of the things that they want.

    http://www.savethestudent.org/money/...ts-201011.html

    Hope it helps everyone.

    Any questions, just ask.

If you're an existing Natwest customer then stick with them and get a railcard. Never had any trouble with them and the online banking is top.

    HSBC lol

    Where do I start...

-firstly, it's UP TO £3000, you're likely not going to get anywhere near that. look for a guaranteed overdraft. Co-op, Natwest, Santander, Lloyd's all have guaranteed overdrafts.

-Secondly, I believe the HSBC 2% interest is only for the first year of study.

    Personally, I went for Santander.

-£1000 overdraft first year, not too bad. Same overdraft tariff as Natwest, Lloyd's etc.

-1% interest on deposits up to £500, and that's a realistic goal...

-Get £50 FREE if you open before the end of August.

Lloyds seem pretty good - free NUS card for 3 yrs and free YHA card. The 40 free emusic downloads are a waste of time - they tried to charge me £25 for 'signing up'. Anyway that's a separate subject. Overdraft seems pretty decent too: £500 for first 6 months, £1000 for 7-9 months, £1500 after that for the rest of Yr 1, 2 and 3.
